Sunderland Target Liam Kelly Told He Can Leave in January

Heated Football League Competition

Kelly, 24, has been told he can depart Holland for England, according to Voetball International (via Chronicle Live).

Although, Sunderland would face a three-way battle to land the midfielder’s signature; the Wearside-based club join MK Dons and Oxford United in showing interest.

The Black Cats have been credited with interest due to speculation over Dylan McGeouch’s Wearside future.

McGeouch has been expected to make a return to Scotland, but boss Phil Parkinson is unwilling to authorise such a move without signing a replacement.

Lee Cattermole’s summer departure has left George Dobson, Max Power and Grant Leadbitter to compete for central midfield places.

Kelly appears to fit the bill required at the Stadium of Light, with his versatility a key selling point for the midfielder.

Speaking about his summer move, Kelly said: “I can handle all positions in midfield, left, right, but most of the time I play centrally.

“I am reasonably two-legged, although my right foot is stronger than the left, although I can give it a good pass.

“My role at Reading was also a playmaker, just before the central defence duo.

“Building up, helping to set up the attacks, I like to get to the ball a lot and that is possible because a lot starts with you.”

Rough Time In Holland

The 24-year-old has had a turbulent time in Holland.

Kelly, formerly of Reading, followed former Royals’ boss Jaap Stam to Feyenoord in the summer.

However, the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international has not featured since Stam’s departure in favour of Dick Advocaat.

Reports abroad now suggest the former Sunderland boss has informed the midfielder he is free to leave in January.
