Arsenal may face a fight to keep hold of midfielder Lucas Torreira. The player’s agent has stated that his client is unhappy with his new role under head coach Unai Emery. Both Napoli and AC Milan are reportedly interested in the Uruguayan and are watching the situation with interest.
Lucas Torreira Not Happy With Unai Emery
Change in Role
Last season, Lucas Torreira earned plaudits with his aggressive, combative style in the centre of the park. This season, however, has seen a change in role for the former Samdoria man.
Unai Emery has deployed Torreira in a more attacking role, much to the chagrin of the midfielder. This change came in spite of man of the match performances against both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur last year.
The head coach is so unimpressed by Lucas Torreira that he wanted to sign Steven Nzonzi in the summer. All of this may mean trouble for Arsenal down the line should they wish to keep the player for the long haul.
Agent’s Words
The player’s agent, Raffaele Bentancur, told Radio Marte: “Anything is possible in football. Torreira is happy at Arsenal, although the change in role has not made him happy. It must be said that this year the whole team is not doing well. But I believe Arsenal wants to keep him.”
The agent went on to detail why his client’s 2018 transfer to Napoli failed in favour of the one to Arsenal:
“It is true, Napoli wanted him, but there was economic distance between their offer and Arsenal’s. Carlo Ancelotti personally tried to take him to Naples and if talks with Arsenal had broken down, he would’ve gone to Napoli. However Arsenal was his choice, English football was more suited to his skills.
“Torreira felt bad about missing out on the move to Naples. Why? Because he is Uruguayan, and because he wants to close his career at Boca Juniors, and Napoli is very similar in atmosphere to Boca.”
