Sacking Mauricio Pochettino is again a major discussion on social media after another tame performance in the home draw with Sheffield United. Many fans remain behind the Argentine, whilst other sections are calling for his head with the twitter hashtag #pochout trending once more.
Sacking Mauricio Pochettino Would Change Nothing
The pressure on Mauricio Pochettino is understandable. Despite working wonders with a lack of consistent investment, the results are not good enough and the performances of too many are simply not acceptable for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. So talk of sacking Mauricio Pochettino is not going to go away until results and performances improve drastically.
If the axe was to fall, who can do any better?
The Constraints Remain the Same
Tottenham may need to ride out this current bad form and hope to change things in January. Daniel Levy, Joe Lewis and ENIC are not going to change their way of running the club. When Pochettino arrived in North London he knew he would have limited resources due to the building of the new stadium. He must have thought that funds would still be more readily available than they have been. Whilst players were brought in this summer, the team is hardly changed from his second season at the helm. That consistency has brought Spurs some rewards in terms of regular top four football. It has still failed to deliver trophies, though.
Mauricio Pochettino could be sacked or walk away from the job and a new man come in. However, with the same constraints being in place for any new manager, it leaves it hard to see how anyone can get Spurs back on track.
Potential Contenders
Jose Mourinho gets linked with every job that comes up or is rumoured to be coming up. It is virtually impossible to see him take the helm at Tottenham Hotspur. He was unhappy with the lack of support when in charge at Manchester United so the idea of Jose and Daniel Levy together is unfathomable. What Mourinho is, is a serial winner but he has always had enormous investment at his disposal. He simply will not get that at Tottenham.
Brendan Rodgers has been linked with Spurs in the past and looking at the job he is doing at Leicester City, who look capable of challenging for the title again, he would be a great fit for the club. Again, he has financial backing at Leicester. It is also hard to see why he would jump ship now, even if it is for a bigger club. Rodgers could be the one that got away.
Consequently, the only manager currently in the Premier League who may accept the constraints at Spurs is Eddie Howe. He has a good record with developing youth players and he would have more cash than he has at Bournemouth. With all due respect to Eddie Howe who is rightly regarded as one of the best young managers in the league, is he a big enough name for Tottenham?
Sacking Mauricio Pochettino Holds No Advantages
A new manager could come in and results could improve. The issue for Tottenham is that there are players who want to leave and the current issues that go back at least 11 months are not going to go away anytime soon. Currently sitting in mid table obscurity, a place that Spurs made their own throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s, things look bleak after a few years of top-four football.
Managers come and go but until ENIC change their transfer policy, sacking Mauricio Pochettino will serve Tottenham no good at all. There are simply no managers bar one that will want to work under a chairman that puts balance books and profits ahead of any on field success. No fan wants Spurs to be in debt but the penny-pinching now means that Spurs are feeling the pinch.
This could be a long season for Tottenham but Mauricio Pochettino is still the man for the job, for now.
