Phil Parkinson Arrives at Sunderland and Investment Deal Close

This weeks edition of the Sunderland Weekly Roundup looks at the arrival of a new manager, investment talks, match reviews and more.
Phil Parkinson

It’s rare that a week goes by at Sunderland without plenty to talk about. The past week has, once again, been no exception. The Sunderland weekly roundup looks at the past seven days, where they saw Phil Parkinson appointed as Jack Ross’s successor and some news on the takeover/investment front.

This week’s edition also looks at the Black Cats’ latest game where they travelled to Wycombe Wanderers, plus there’s the latest from the Academy and Ladies teams.

Phil Parkinson Arrives and Investment Deal Close

Phil Parkinson Appointed

On Thursday, the wait to find out who would succeed Jack Ross was over. Former Bolton Wanderers manager Phil Parkinson was announced as Sunderland’s new manager.

His remit is a simple one: win promotion. Parkinson has a lot of experience and has achieved promotion several times, particularly from League One. Although he may not have been the first choice for many fans, they will all have everything crossed he can guide the club back to the Championship.

Wycombe Wanderers Review

Parkinson had just 48 hours to prepare for his first game in charge. Sadly, it was not enough time. The Black Cats travelled to in-form Wycombe hoping to get the Parkinson era off to a winning start.

Sunderland produced a performance similar to those that saw Jack Ross sacked. A goal conceded from a set-piece meant the Black Cats travelled home with nothing. Parkinson has much work to do should he achieve the aim of promotion. Games will now come thick and fast, beginning with a home game against Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday.

Investment Close to Being a Done Deal

Rumours of late were suggesting that the proposed takeover/investment wasn’t going as well as had hoped. There was a worry that the deal for a group of American businessmen to invest in the club was in danger of collapsing.

However, on Saturday, the Sunderland Echo reported that the deal was far from over. In fact, it was close to being completed.

Robert Platek, Glenn Fuhrman, John Phelan and Michael Dell have been in talks about becoming investors for some time now. If reports are to be believed, the end of this story could be about to end with Sunderland having some of the world’s wealthiest men involved with the club.

Academy and Ladies News

Sunderland U18’s search for their first win of the season continues after Derby County visited the Academy of Light and defeated their hosts 3-0.

Having progressed in the County Cup last week, Sunderland U23’s returned to league action on Monday night. They faced local rivals Newcastle United in a Tyne-Wear derby. The hosts were hoping to extend their unbeaten run. The young Black Cats were reduced to ten men in the first half when trailing 1-0

A second-half strike gave the visitors a two-goal lead. It was a lead that the home side were unable to come back from.

Sunderland Ladies continued their fine form on Sunday, tightening their grip at the top of the table. They travelled to Sheffield and ran out comfortable 6-1 winners. The ladies are currently unbeaten in the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier having won six and drawn one so far.
