Sunderland Announce Phil Parkinson as New Manager

Former Bolton Wanderers manager Phil Parkinson has been appointed the new manager of Sunderland on an 18-month deal.

The Black Cats have been without a boss since owner Stewart Donald sacked Jack Ross last week.

A number of names had been linked to the vacant position; however, after a meeting between Parkinson and Donald, Sunderland had their man.

Parkinson was unveiled in a press conference on Thursday after meeting the players and current staff at the Academy of Light. He will now plan for a difficult trip to Wycombe Wanderers this Saturday.

Not Fans First Choice But New Man Gets Teams Promoted

Stewart Donald wanted a manager with League One experience. In particular, one who had a history of getting his teams promotion.

In Parkinson, who, for many fans may not have been their number one choice, Donald has got a man with a proven track record.

Parkinson’s Managerial History

Parkinson took his first steps into management in 2003 at Colchester United.

He guided the U’s to the Championship in 2006.

He then went on to manage Hull City, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers.

Parkinson took Bradford City to promotion and a League Cup final in 2013.

With Bolton, Parkinson led them to the Championship in 2017.

He is now set to take on his biggest challenge at the biggest club he has managed.

What Was Said

Speaking to the club website after his appointment, Parkinson said: “It is both a privilege and immense responsibility to be appointed manager of this great club. I’ve been in football a long time now, and Sunderland’s immense history, the passion of its fanbase and its wonderful facilities are legendary within the game.

“It’s now up to me to build on the work of my predecessor and deliver the success the fans are so desperate for. This is a good squad of players, and I relish the challenge of working with them to achieve our goal of promotion from League One.”
