Vitor Matos Becomes Liverpool’s Elite Development Coach
Matos has joined Liverpool’s coaching staff, becoming the club’s elite development coach. This position was previously held by current assistant manager Pepijn Ljinders. This role will see Matos work closely with the club’s young players as Ljinders did previously. There will also be doors opened for Matos himself as a result of this position – Ljinders was briefly appointed manager of Dutch side N.E.C before returning to fill the assistant manager position at Liverpool vacated by Zeljko Buvac towards the end of the 2017/18 season.
This will see Matos work with some of the outstanding young talents at the club, such as summer signings Harvey Elliot and Sepp van Den Berg as well as youngsters who have been at the club for a while such as Ki-Jana Hoever and Curtis Jones. His appointment will hopefully see more of the club’s academy products make the transition to the first team.
Matos’ Experience
Matos has a wealth of experience when it comes to developing youth players. He has had two separate stints with FC Porto and worked as the club’s B team’s assistant coach. During his time with Porto, Matos had also held positions as head coach for U10, U12 and U14 levels as well as assistant coach positions for the U15s and U17s. He also scouted opposition for the U19s and Porto’s B team.
Matos has also worked for Chinese side Shandong Luneng as both youth technical co-ordinator and U16 head coach. In addition, he has also completed his UEFA Elite Youth A license.
