Arguably Europe’s hottest property, Matthijs de Ligt will join Juventus on a 5-year deal worth an estimated £67 million. The inevitable has finally happened for Ajax after their sensational run to the semi-finals of the Champions League this season. The inspirational teenager is the latest star off the Ajax Amsterdam production line to leave the club. He had been at Ajax since 2009.

Prodigy
Still only 19, de Ligt has already won a number of personal accolades in his young career. He only turns 20 in August and had Europe’s biggest clubs clamouring for his signature before eventually agreeing to join Italian giants, Juventus. De Ligt became the youngest captain in the knock-out phase of the Champions League this past season to add to his numerous personal accomplishments.
At 17, the defender became the youngest debutant in the history of the Dutch national team in March 2017. The youngster was soon named the captain of Ajax – the youngest in history to have that honour. In 2018, De Ligt won the European Golden Boy award, awarded to the best young player on the continent.

Unlimited Potential
De Ligt made 55 total appearances for Ajax, scoring 7 goals, after breaking into the first-team in 2016. For the Dutch national team, he has made 2 appearances so far with his solitary goal coming against Germany in a 3-2 defeat in Amsterdam earlier this year in a Euro 2020 qualifier.
De Ligt has all the tools to be a leader in the dressing room despite his tender age. On the pitch, he is a ball-playing centre-back. His fine technique should be of no surprise given his Ajax roots while he is also more than capable of being an aerial threat from corners.
