Colchester United midfielder Sammie Szmodics is subject to increased interest from a number of higher-league sides. Sky Sports claim the 23-year-old is a target for three Championship teams.
Sammie Szmodics Highly Sought After
Higher League Interest for Sammie Szmodics
Colchester United’s Sammie Szmodics is a summer target for a number of Sky Bet Championship clubs.
The exciting midfielder was confirmed as being a target for Darren Ferguson’s League One Peterborough United; however, the Posh boss has also revealed the high levels of interest in Szmodics from elsewhere.
Bristol Live report that Bristol City have been tracking the 23-year-old, although it is Ferguson’s side who have been the first to agree on a fee.
Szmodics’ signature has not yet been won completely though; the Peterborough Telegraph claim that the Posh are yet to meet with Szmodics, but talks with Frankie Kent are ongoing regarding personal terms.
“Frankie and Sammie Szmodics have both been brought up well at Colchester. They look after their younger players. I’ve kept an eye on Szmodics for a couple of seasons. He’s a really good player who would suit the way we want to play,” said Ferguson (via BristolLive).
“I’m aware other clubs might want him, but we have the advantage of having had a bid accepted. I have yet to speak to the player though.”
Meanwhile, Sky Sports claim that Bristol City are joined by Hull City and Derby County in seeking Szmodics’ signature.
Potential for Tribunal Fee
It is believed that Szmodics’ contract expires this summer; however, one source has informed BristolLive that the U’s have a one-year option which they could exercise to extract a transfer fee.
If this was to happen, the winning club would have to agree on a fee with Colchester. However, if that option does not transpire then clubs have two weeks for Szmodics to have his contract expire and then depart Essex as a free agent.
Szmodics, who has been a Colchester player since he was seven, would be subject to a tribunal fee as he is under 24 years of age.
