You may have noticed exciting left-winger Everton, not to be mistaken with the Premier League club of the same name. Everton has been impressing for a while at Brazilian outfit Grêmio and for the country’s national team too.
Some of Europe’s elite have expressed interest in the 23-year-old recently, including Manchester United according to Manchester Evening News’ Paul Clarke. with his goal in the opening match of the Copa América on Friday only proving exactly why he is a wanted man. Who is Everton?
Everton Sousa Soares, simply known as Everton, was born in March 1996 in the city of Maracanaú. He joined two time Copa Libertadores winners Grêmio, based in Port Alegre, in 2012, initially on loan. Everton moved permanently a year later and managed to progress to the first squad in 2014, where he has been ever since.
The winger has developed well at Grêmio, scoring 27 goals and nine assists in 113 league appearances, with a number of those being from off the bench. A huge part of Everton’s game is confidence as he has the ability to wriggle past defenders consistently. This is a common feature of Brazilian attackers.
Everton is also a good shooter and is able to provide key passes to strikers. His talent has been recognised by the national team. He has played in a number of games for the Brazil national team, with head coach Tite highly rating him.
A Move to Europe Imminent
Nicknamed the ‘Little Onion’, Everton has been linked with a number of Europe’s top sides, most notably AC Milan, according to Calciomercato, United, and Manchester City, according to Sports Mole’s Daniel Lewis. At this moment, no club has made a concrete offer. Everton himself has opened up about a move.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “I’m a player that’s always trying to get on top (of the situation). Cutting in from the left with dribbles and good finishes. Clubs in Europe have this style of play too and maybe I can fit in at Manchester United and others.’
The Brazilian press have reported that the clubs interest competing are looking to pay between £27 million and £36 million. However, Grêmio club president Romildo Bolzan Junior has stated before that the club will only look to sell if his release clause of £71 million is triggered. It’s unlikely at this stage that a club will pay such a price.

Brazil are hosting the current Copa América competition. The tournament sees countries from South America (with a few exceptions) compete to become the champion of the continent, similar to the European Championships. Everton was picked as part of his country’s squad. The youngster was chosen over other top wingers such as Real Madrid‘s Vinicius Júnior and Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Moura.
Everton has already made an impact, with just one game having been played. Coming on deep into the game, the 23-year-old scored Brazil’s third goal of the game five minutes later, to round off a victory over Bolivia. Cutting in from the left side, Everton curled the ball into the corner of the net. With more opportunities to come his way as the competition progressed, Everton could really establish himself over the next few weeks.
