It is gearing up to be a busy few days at Sunderland. The January Transfer window closes on Thursday and the Black Cats are hoping to do plenty of business. The promotion hopefuls are keen to bring in at least three on top of the signing of defender Jimmy Dunne who signed on loan from Burnley. Here is a look at the latest Sunderland transfer news and rumours.
Black Cats Transfer News and Rumours
Confirmed and Potential Ins
Grant Leadbitter
Middlesbrough midfielder Leadbitter completed his move on Tuesday. The 33-year-old underwent a medical on Monday and has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract. Leadbitter is a boyhood Sunderland fan and rejected offers from the Championship to return to the club he left in 2009.
Will Grigg
The Will Grigg story has been building since the beginning of the transfer window. The Black Cats have made no secret of their desire to bring in the prolific striker. Four bids were rejected; however, a fifth is believed to have been submitted. It is now expected that Grigg will be a Sunderland player come the end of the month.
Kiefer Moore
Rumours began to circulate last week of Sunderland’s interest in the Barnsley forward. Reports suggested that a bid of around £2 million could be submitted. However, Barnsley want closer to £4 million to tempt them to sell. The forward is Barnsley’s top scorer and scored two goals at the Stadium of Light earlier this season.
Erhun Oztumer
The Bolton midfielder only joined from Walsall last summer when he was also linked to Wearside. The attacking midfielder was a star player for Walsall in League One. He scored 32 goals in 95 appearances. Jack Ross has been looking for more goals from midfield and Oztumer could fit the bill.
Lewis Morgan
The Black Cats are reportedly winning the race to sign Celtic winger Lewis Morgan on loan. The 22-year-old played for Jack Ross at St Mirren and is keen to move to Sunderland rather than Aberdeen, who are also in the hunt. The winger scored 18 goals as St Mirren, led by Jack Ross, won the Scottish Championship with ease.
Stephen Walker
Recent reports are suggesting that Jack Ross and his coaching team have looked “very closely” at Middlesbrough’s prolific youngster. The 18-year-old is a hot prospect. He was watched scoring a hat trick recently. However, it appears that Ross has decided that experience is more important at this stage.
Confirmed and Potential Outs
Bryan Oviedo
Clubs from the Championship and in Europe are reportedly interested in the Costa Rica international. The left-back is one of the club’s highest earners. The club are open to offers due to his high wages and also that they have sufficient cover in the left-back position.
Josh Maja
The 20-year-old left Sunderland for Bordeaux last week after a long, drawn-out saga. Maja was in the last six months of his contract and could have left for almost nothing. However, Sunderland could now receive up to £3.5 million for the striker who has scored 16 goals this season.
