The wild season at AS Monaco has taken another turn as the club have reappointed Leonardo Jardim their manager. This comes following the club’s decision to suspend manager Thierry Henry until a further decision was made on his future.
AS Monaco Reappoint Leonardo Jardim as Manager
It has been a torrid season for AS Monaco. The club came into this campaign having sold most of their best players. Quality players like Fabinho, Thomas Lemar and Joao Moutinho, among others, left the club to be replaced by a new crop of talented youngsters, per club policy.
Well, this batch of youngsters have had a hard time adjusting to life in the principality. Monaco got off to a very poor start and fired Leonardo Jardim in a move to control the damage, but it did not work. They brought in Thierry Henry and his stint at the club was even worse.
Through 20 games in charge, Henry had won just five, drawing four and losing 11. The team looked flat, unimaginative and completely unorganized during Henry’s tenure. After his run in charge, Monaco sit 19th in Ligue 1 and are hoping that turning back to Jardim will keep them alive.
It’s a surprise that they are even able to turn to Jardim. The 44-year-old coach has been one of the favourites for almost every job opening since his firing in October. He was even rumoured to be going to China and his return will apparently come at the cost of Sporting Director Michael Emenalo’s job. The deterioration of their relationship is what led to Jardim’s surprise firing.
Emenalo did leave Jardim with a few new players to work with. Cesc Fabregas and Naldo came into the side at the start of January, veterans looking to help a young side survive relegation. Only time will tell if Jardim is able to keep this team from falling back into the lower divisions.
