Five Defenders Manchester United Need To Consider In January

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has not been impressed by his defenders so far this season. Shipping 21 Premier League goals in 12 matches makes defensive reinforcements a must for United in January. Here are five options from Last Word On Football.

Five Defenders Manchester United Need To Consider In January

Harry Maguire

The Leicester City defender has made a meteoric rise during the past two years. Signed from Hull City for £12 million last year, Maguire has been a regular for The Foxes since. His stock rose further after breaking into the England squad. Assured performances in England’s fabulous run to the World Cup semi-finals further enhanced his growing reputation. Jose Mourinho is known to be a fan of the Sheffield-born defender. A move to a top six seems inevitable at some point for the 25-year-old.

Nikola Milenkovic

The Fiorentina centre-back is a burly 6’5″ no-nonsense defender. Good with his feet and an excellent passing range makes him a perfect player to shore up United’s defence. The 21-year old has been in excellent form for Fiorentina and also has international experience with ten caps for his native Serbia.

Jan Vertonghen

Vertonghen has proven himself to be one of the Premier League’s best defenders. During his six years at Tottenham, he has anchored the Spurs defence to great effect. Although now 31-years old, Vertonghen’s experience and ability would tick all the boxes for Jose Mourinho.

Daniele Rugani

The 24-year-old has never quite become a regular with Juventus, with the likes of Chiellini, and previously Bonucci picked ahead of him. The Italy international is a particularly physical defender and very good in the air. Very comfortable on the ball, he cuts a confident figure playing out from the back.

Jose Gimenez

The Uruguayan joined Atletico Madrid as an 18-year-old. Now 23, he has gone to make over 100 appearances for the La Liga giants. A warrior type figure, he puts his body on the line at all costs. His international experience is impressive for a player of his age. He has been capped on 47 occasions and has the potential to become a Uruguayan legend.
