Ex-Arsenal defender Sol Campbell is favourite to become the new manager of struggling League Two club Macclesfield Town.
Former Arsenal Hero Sol Campbell Set To Enter Club Management
The Silkmen have endured a difficult start. They currently sit bottom of the league with seven points from 18 games and have only won once all season. Neil Haworth and Danny Whitaker have been in temporary charge at Moss Rose since Mark Yates was sacked just over six weeks ago.
Campbell has recently been involved in the England U21 set-up. An FA initiative to increase the number of black and Asian managers has been created. BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) coaches are few and far between. As part of the initiative, the 44-year-old enjoyed 10 days coaching alongside Aidy Boothroyd and Lee Carsley.
The former Tottenham man also gained experience as an assistant to ex-Swansea player Dennis Lawrence with Trinidad and Tobago.
Claims by The Mirror are that Campbell has held talks with Macclesfield chairman Mark Blower. Taking over such a big task would be a huge challenge for Campbell but one he would surely relish as a stepping stone to manage at the highest level.
Outspoken and Controversial
The former Portsmouth defender spent five years with Arsenal during two spells. He is not short of controversy having made the move to The Gunners from North-London rivals Tottenham.
In 2014 he described the FA as ‘institutionally racist’ after being overlooked as England captain. He claimed he would have worn the armband for 10-years had he been white.
More recently, he described himself as “one of the greatest minds in football” after missing out on the top job at Oxford United.
In contrast, he has praised the way diversity is being dealt with by the FA by recently saying: “Football was probably the slowest of all the sports to open up to diversity, now I think the pathways are there.”
