They are a long way away from the heady days of Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles and Micky Hazard and now live life in football’s fourth tier. Phil Brown’s greatest managerial achievement was to take Hull City into the Premier League. He kept them up only to be seen as a pantomime villain for that half-time team-talk against Manchester City the following season. He kept the players on the pitch in what was seen as a public humiliation.

Along with Hull’s promotion to the Premier League in 2008, Phil Brown also guided Southend into League One. Brown began his coaching career at Blackpool and worked as assistant manager at Bolton Wanderers under Sam Allardyce before moving into management. His time at Derby County wasn’t a great start. It will be his efforts at Hull City and his near five years at Southend United that will be seen as his most fruitful.

The sacking of Phil Brown leads Swindon to now search for a fifth manager in just three years. There has been inconsistency at Swindon which has subsequently hampered efforts to become Promotion contenders. With so many changes of manager, this is a job that many will approach with caution. There aren’t too many names being mentioned thus far. Neil McDonald, Brown’s assistant, has also left the club with immediate effect and Swindon Town need to get the next appointment right if they want to be promotion contenders and avoid playing non-league football next season.
