Salomon Rondon and Dwight Gayle have replaced each other at West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United respectively. Newcastle take the Venezuelan frontman from West Brom on a season-long loan with Dwight Gayle going the other way on loan as part of the deal. Rondon was not included in West Brom’s squad for their Championship opener against Bolton on Saturday, with the two clubs negotiating a deal for the 28-year-old over the past month.
Salomon Rondon Joins Newcastle
The Magpies have completed the loan deal that will secure Rondon’s services for the season ahead. The striker has 12 months left on his current contract at West Brom but a one-year extension in West Brom’s favour has been added as part of this deal. The Baggies are keen to protect themselves against their £16 million asset walking free next summer.
Rondon will be excited to show his goalscoring prowess at Newcastle, having been the frontman at West Brom during the Tony Pulis era, a role that often saw the striker separated from his deep-lying midfield and feeding off of long balls pumped aimlessly towards him. Goals were hard to come by at West Brom for Rondon as well as the rest of their squad. Hopefully, Rafa Benitez will bring out the best in Rondon as he looks to prove his Premier League pedigree.
Dwight Gayle Joins West Brom
As part of the Salomon Rondon deal, West Brom get Dwight Gayle plus £2million with no obligation to buy next summer. Gayle didn’t feature for Newcastle much last season but was prolific in the Championship two years ago. A proven goalscorer is what Albion were crying out for in their opening league game. And in this division, Dwight Gayle could be exactly what they’re looking for.
Gayle scored 23 goals during the 2016/17 season, playing a large part in the Magpies’ promotion from the Championship. But was unable to carry that form into the Premier League, scoring just six times for Rafa Benitez’s side. The 27-year-old will only stay at the Hawthorns for one season, however, the Englishman will be hoping to make an impact and help fire the Baggies back to the Premier League.
