Portugal 1-0 Morocco: Ronaldo’s lone tally pushes Portugal past Morocco

The 33-year-old striker scored the game-winning goal against Morocco. The African nation has officially been eliminated from the FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, Portugal is sitting pretty in their group. As it stands, Portugal is on top of the group with four points. However, Iran is close behind with three points — but have a tough task against Spain later today.

So far in this tournament, Ronaldo has taken 10 shots resulting in four goals. He is currently the top goal-scorer of the tournament. Yesterday, Dennis Cherysehv tied Ronaldo with three goals.

In total, Portugal took 10 shots today, with two registering on goal. Moroccan goalkeeper Munir made a big save against Gonçalo Guedes in the 39th minute to prevent a lead by double.

On the other end, Rui Patrício made three saves for Portugal.

Three Takeaways

  1. Come on, Pepe: Ronaldo isn’t the only player for Portugal known for his dramatics. Four years after headbutting Thomas Muller of Germany, Pepe found himself on the opposite site of World Cup news. After being pat on the back by Medhi Benatia, Pepe fell to the ground in a dramatic fashion. The Portuguese had the match wrapped up. Pepe was just making a fool of himself.
  2. Don’t question Ronaldo’s greatness: Even if Ronaldo doesn’t hoist the World Cup trophy with Portugal, there’s no doubt that this is one of his best tournaments so far. He’s already scored four goals and only Cheryshev is close to him for the Golden Boot — if you’re not counting own goals. Win or lose, Ronaldo’s tournament will be one to remember.
  3. Americans are allowed: Twenty-three members of the U.S. Men’s National Team might not be competing in Russia, but there is an American presence. No, there’s more than just people wearing Columbus Crew SC and Los Angeles FC signs and flags. Mark Geiger is back for his third World Cup. He did an admirable job in the high-intensity match up.
