Liverpool have completed the signing of Monaco midfielder Fabinho. The highly rated Brazillian has arrived in Merseyside for a fee believed to be in the region of £43 million. Fabinho won one league title at Monaco.
The Brazillian will be the second midfielder to arrive at the club this summer. Guinea international Naby Keita is also joining the Reds. A deal to sign the player was agreed to last summer by Liverpool and Red Bull Leipzig. Liverpool activated the player’s £48 million release clause last August with the player spending another year in the Bundesliga.
Fabinho Set to Join Liverpool From Monaco
The midfielder was quoted during an interview with Liverpoolfc.com saying: “I will try to create my own history at this football club. Hopefully, on a personal level, I’m able to win titles with this club”. The Brazillian, who has four caps for his country, will formally seal a deal to the reds on July 1st. The midfielder scored 29 goals in 225 games during his time at Monaco.
Fabinho Gives Liverpool Options
The former Monaco man can play as either a defensive midfielder or as a right back. Liverpool are potentially losing German midfielder Emre Can this summer. Can’s contract is due to expire before the start of next season and the player does not appear to want to sign an extension. Fabinho will most likely be his replacement. The midfielder has not been included in Brazil’s World Cup squad and this will benefit Liverpool as the player is almost guaranteed a full pre-season.
The Liverpool midfield was a point of concern all season. Many fans use it as a reference point to their average Premier League campaign. A midfield of Fabinho, Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a massive improvement and could see them recognized as Manchester City’s main challengers next season.
FSG Backing Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool are owned by the Fenway Sports Group and in previous years they have been accused of not backing the club financially. The signing of Fabinho has brought the club’s spending near the £100 million mark and it is only the start of June.
If Liverpool maintain a similar spending policy then they will lose their ‘underdogs’ tag. They will be expected to finally win a trophy under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool lost this season’s Champions League final. Real Madrid defeated them but were helped in no small part by two blunders by goalkeeper Loris Karius. Liverpool fans will hope that new recruits will see them over the line next season.
