Gareth Southgate has released the England World Cup squad for 2018. With relatively few surprises, the team offers a few potentially exciting World Cup newcomers.
England World Cup Squad
Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Stoke), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Nick Pope (Burnley).
Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Kyle Walker, John Stones (Manchester City), Harry Maguire (Leicester), Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose (Tottenham Hotspur), Phil Jones, Ashley Young (Manchester United).
Midfielders: Eric Dier, Dele Alli (both Tottenham Hotspur), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea).
Forwards: Jamie Vardy (Leicester), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Danny Welbeck (Arsenal) Harry Kane (Tottenham).
Standby: Tom Heaton, James Tarkowski (Burnley), Lewis Cook (Bournemouth), Jake Livermore (West Brom) and Adam Lallana (Liverpool)
Notable Omissions
The only two names to really jump out as having been omitted from the team are Joe Hart and Jack Wilshere. The pair have been capped many times for country, but have failed to impress Southgate enough to keep their spots.
Jack Wilshere has had his share of injury problems which have hampered his career’s trajectory. Having a relatively healthy season this year for Arsenal and last season whilst on loan, the midfielder was certainly a question mark.
Joe Hart has been a stalwart in the England squad throughout much of his career. But his dip in form over the past few seasons leading to his loan to Torino then return to the Premier League to play for West Ham left an opening for Butland, Pope, and Pickford.
