Heung-Min Son: Tottenham’s Unsung Hero

Whilst understandably it is Harry Kane getting all the plaudits and the limelight shone upon him, it is Heung-Min Son who is Tottenham’s unsung hero.

Tottenham’s Unsung Hero

Unsung Goal Hero

Whilst Tottenham have progressed well under Pochettino, there is one thing, trophies aside, that they have failed to do over the past three seasons; to sign a capable back up to Kane. Fernando Llorente joined in the summer but has struggled to find any kind of form. Even though he netted a hat-trick in the FA Cup replay against Rochdale prior to this game, he wasn’t even in the squad for the game against Huddersfield Town at Wembley.

What Son has done is to provide additional firepower to Kane’s constant record-breaking antics. Son has taken his tally to 15 goals this season after his brace against Huddersfield and looks set to finish with over twenty on current form. Son’s lack of goals away from Wembley is perhaps a cause for some concern but he has shown that the Wembley jinx so many put on Spurs’ head is well and truly gone with only two games resulting in defeat for them at the home of football. Son himself mentioned this in his post-match interview:

“We feel comfortable at Wembley, we know how we play here,” Son told the BBC. “Of course, it was going to take time but now we feel like we’re at home. We enjoy playing here…”

More Than Goals

Son provides more to this Tottenham squad than just goals. His smile is infectious and he lifts those around him. He is a huge personality both off and on the pitch. He uses both feet with ease and also has the ability to use his head as he demonstrated as he notched his second against Huddersfield after a lovely cross from Kane found him in the box. Kane’s influence is not lost on Son but he also knows that the team is the most important aspect:

“The pass from Harry Kane was very good for me, it made it easy to score,” said Son. “Harry is one of the best players in the world. The manager has to choose 11 players but there are many more.”

Bright Future

There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by where one of Spurs’ team isn’t going to be sold or the manager move to Madrid. The speculation regarding Toby Alderweireld rages on but if the Tottenham hierarchy wants to tie anyone down to a new contract it should be Son that the pen is given to. The spark within the Spurs engine, the bright light that gives Spurs pace and skill.

Son epitomises Pochettino and Spurs’ long-term project. And behind every success is usually an unsung hero.
