Marco Silva has chosen his man between the sticks. That or the Watford Recruitment Team have failed to procure an adequate goalkeeping replacement for the Brazilian.
Watford’s Heurelho Gomes Signs New Contract
This morning, the club announced that Heurelho Gomes had signed a new two-year contract. ‘Rewarded for his fine performances’, his stay in South-West Hertfordshire will continue until June 2019. His initial contract had one year left to run.
The Hornets were reportedly looking to recruit a younger replacement for the 36-year-old. However, Watford have been unable to sign a goalkeeper that would be considered as an upgrade for the forthcoming season. Reports had suggested that former Juventus goalkeeper Neto and former Hull goalkeeper Jakupovic had been lined up. However, the transfer targets opted for moves to Valencia and Leicester, respectively.
Gomes will continue as number one with his eighth manager at Vicarage Road. The reigning player’s player of the season will add to his 115 league appearances for the Golden Boys, since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2014. The reliable stopper is joint 14th in the Premier League list of goalkeeping clean sheets, with a total of 48. He is the only South American goalkeeper in the top 20. Only Sunderland, West Brom and Hull City kept fewer clean sheets than Watford, last season.
Transfer Update
The Hornets continue to be linked with central defenders, left-backs and pacey forwards, as they look to build on their disappointing 17th position finish last season. In terms of outgoings, only Mario Suarez has departed, although head coach Marco Silva will likely sanction more departures if enhancements can be recruited.
Recent stories have linked 27-year-old Valencia centre-back Aymen Abdennour to a Vicarage Road move. The Tunisian international has disappointed in Spain, since making a move from Monaco in 2015. If signed, the powerful, left-footed defender would be a replacement for 32 year-old Miguel Britos. The Uruguayan is approaching the last year of a 3-year deal with Watford.
Marco Silva has recently suggested that while there will be no more midfield recruits, he is hoping to bring in more players to add to his inflated squad.
