Once tipped to be a superstar at Manchester United, Adnan Januzaj endured a miserable season on loan in the North East as Sunderland were relegated from the Premier League.
Januzaj has since returned to Manchester and his future has never been more uncertain. United manager José Mourinho opted to omit the Belgian from the club’s 27-man tour squad of the United States, raising questions as to whether he will still be at Old Trafford beyond the summer.
Adnan Januzaj Manchester United Future Looks Bleak
The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season under former Manchester United boss David Moyes in 2013-14, regularly appearing in the starting XI and putting in some stellar performances. He was a rare bright spot in a disappointing season for the Red Devils. Soon after, he fell down the pecking order under Louis Van Gaal and later Mourinho.
Following a failed short loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, Januzaj linked up once again with Moyes at Sunderland last season, but he was powerless to stop the Black Cats from relegation.
His exclusion from the tour squad is even more significant given that fellow loanee Andreas Pereira was selected to travel, after performing admirably at Granada last term. Like Januzaj, Pereira also suffered from relegation as Granada finished last season bottom of La Liga, but Mourinho was clearly impressed with the young Brazilian’s efforts.
Adding insult to injury, Januzaj has been reportedly told he will not receive a squad number ahead of the upcoming campaign, indicating further that an exit is looming. For a player who was handed the legendary Ryan Giggs’ no.11 jersey only two seasons ago, this will come as a huge blow.
Real Sociedad have already submitted a bid, which suggests that the Belgian youngster could join yet another one of David Moyes’ former teams. Certainly, it seems that his time at Old Trafford is coming to an end.
