Utah Agrees To Terms With 2023 Second Round Draft Pick, Jazz Must Make Roster Move Before Signing Official
Wong was selected by the Indiana Pacers with the 55th pick of the 2023 draft. The 23-year-old, who appeared in one game with the Pacers, spent most of last season with the G-League’s Indiana Mad Ants. Wong impressed the NBA with his all-around game enough to earn an invitation to the NBA Next Up game during All-Star weekend.
But the Pacers decided not to offer the 6-3 guard a qualifying offer, making him a free agent in July. Wong hooked up with Phoenix’s summer league team and was fantastic as a scorer, reaching double figures in three of his five appearances.
After not earning a deal following the Las Vegas Summer League, Wong joined the G-League United—a team of G-League stars and prospects—for the league’s Fall Festival and FIBA International Cup. He only played in one of GLU’s five games, totaling 14 points on 5 of 11 shooting, including 2 of 4 from the 3-point line, three assists, and two steals in 14 minutes against Serbian Club Mega Mis.
Wonk is an athletic slasher who can knock down open 3-pointers but is not a great shooter. He has shown some ability as a secondary distributor but is not a great ball-handler.
Since Utah already has 21 players on their training camp roster, they must cut someone before Wong’s signing is official.
Utah Jazz Training Camp Roster
Utah has 15 players on standard fully guaranteed contracts with a cap hit of just $144 million. The Jazz are still in rebuilding mode. While a trade isn’t expected before the start of the season, Walker Kessler, Jordan Clarkson, and possibly John Collins and Collin Sexton are potential trade candidates.
Patty Mills signed a one-year guaranteed deal with the Jazz. While Mills was likely brought in to provide leadership to the Jazz’s young guards, it is possible he won’t make the 15-man roster. He only has a $2 million cap hit and has appeared in 40 or fewer games in the last two seasons.
The Jazz also have Micah Potter, Oscar Tschiebwe, and Jason Preston on two-way deals. Potter and Tschiebwe are probably the safest of the three players.
Potter, who has NBA experience, is a tough-nosed player who is an excellent rebounder and capable floor spacer. Tschiebwe, who has little NBA experience, was the 2024 G-League Rookie of the Year and participated in the NBA Rising Stars Game.
Preston was the No. 33 pick in the 2021 draft. The 6-4 point guard has spent most of his career in the G-League, though he has appeared in 21 NBA games, including seven last season for the Jazz. However, he didn’t play much in the summer league and wasn’t overly impressive.
Who Could Get Cut Before Camp
While Preston’s position is probably a little vulnerable, he will be in Jazz’s camp. Max Abmas, Babacar Sane, and Keshawn Justice are the players on Exhibit 10 deals.
Abmas went undrafted in 2024 out of Oral Roberts. The 5-11 undersized guard, who impressed during the summer league, is an outstanding shooter and scorer.
Sane also went undrafted in 2024 after playing two seasons with the G-League Ignite. The athletic 6-7 forward didn’t play much during the summer league.
Justice and the Jazz officially completed their deal on Friday. The 6-7 forward went undrafted in 2023 and played for Utah’s G-League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars. He wasn’t great with the Stars or during the summer league.
Either Sane or Justice will likely be waived to make room for Wong. Both could be waived before training camp if the Jazz decide to sign more players. Regardless, Abmas, Sane, and Justice project to be with the Stars to start the season.
Wong could end up being an affiliate player, though he may also be able to earn a two-way spot, most likely the one owned by Preston, with a strong training camp.
