The Magic later confirmed and CEO Alex Martins made the announcement. Reports that Hennigan had was on the ‘hot seat’ had been circulating since mid-season. Hennigan was appointed Magic general manager in June 2012 but failed to install a winning culture in Orlando. A statement from the team read:

“We appreciate Rob’s efforts to rebuild the team, but we feel we have not made any discernible improvement over the last few years specifically. It’s time for different leadership in basketball operations. We certainly wish Rob and his family well.”

The Magic went on to announce that former assistant general manager Matt Lloyd, would be named the interim general manager. Lloyd, who was appointed with Hennigan in 2012, had worked for the Chicago Bulls for 13 years prior to joining the Magic and will be a candidate for the permanent job.

“Matt brings solid experience  and his appointment as general manager on an interim basis will allow us to seemlessly continue our preparations for the upcoming draft.”

During Hennigan’s tenure Orlando held a record of 132-278 (.322), the second worst in the NBA over that period of time.
