Alexus Dye has grown into one of the best players in the Sun Belt Conference during her time with the Troy Trojans. The senior was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for last week after she dropped two double-doubles. Against Georgia Southern, Dye scored 17 points and 12 rebounds in the Trojans’ first win over the Eagles. In game two, she scored 16 points with 16 rebounds. The senior forward averaged 16.5 points per game and 14 rebounds per game against the Eagles. The Player of the Week honor was her third of her career and second of the season.
The Trojans’ best player continues to shine at both ends of the floor. She has tremendous upside on the offensive end. Dye can grab rebounds while also hitting jumpers in the post and at the mid-range level. Troy women’s basketball is better at both ends when their star player is on the court. As Troy heads through conference play, Dye continues to get better.
Alexus Dye Leading Troy
Junior Season Success
Dye’s ability to score in the post for the Trojans has been a big momentum boost this season. Last year, the Trojans finished 25-4 and were headed for an NCAA Tournament berth. Then the global pandemic happened and their opportunity was gone. But Dye played solid last season, too. She averaged 10.1 points per game which was the third-highest on the team. In rebounds, she snagged 9.6 boards per game. The then-junior also recorded 18 steals, 13 assists, and 15 blocks. She was a big motivational driver to the Trojans’ regular-season Sun Belt title.
Alexus Dye’s Continued Dominance
However, in 2020-21, Dye has stepped up and begun to lead the team. When she isn’t averaging a double-double, the senior is still a dominant factor of the Trojans’ success. On the defensive end, Dye is a dynamic defender down low. If an opposing shooter is driving in her way, she can easily go up and block the shot.
As the Trojans close out their two home games against Coastal Carolina, Dye has to continue to be a factor in the game. In the first game, she scored 14 points in 20 minutes of game action. She finished with another double-double as she had 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds. The 6’0″ forward finished 7-of-11 shooting from the floor in Friday’s 104-59 victory over the Chanticleers.
Dye’s playmaking ability on the offensive end and stellar defense led the Trojans to a 45-point victory over the pre-season second-best team in the Sun Belt. Troy moves to 8-4 overall with the win and 4-1 in conference play. Game two is set for Saturday inside Trojan Arena.
Final Thoughts
Alexus Dye has become a dominant playmaker for a dominant mid-major team. The Trojans got a solid player in Dye when she transferred to Troy after two years at Gulf Coast Community College. As the Trojans compete for another NCAA Tournament berth, their star forward will likely continue her dominance on the court. Should she finish the season at a high level, Dye could hear her name called in the 2021 WNBA Draft in a few months.
