While the date of the 2020 NBA draft is currently up in the air, we do know it will be happening at some point. Of the 60 players who are going to be selected, very few possess an offensive skillset like Texas Tech standout Jahmi’us Ramsey. The 6’4″ guard is hoping to make his way into the first round and prove he has what it takes to succeed at the next level.
Jahmi’us Ramsey 2020 NBA Draft Profile
College Career
As a four-star recruit out of high school, Ramsey had his fair share of options of where to continue his basketball career. He received offers from some of the top schools in the nation including Oregon, Florida, and Louisville. Ramsey ultimately decided that Texas Tech would be the best fit for him as he signed there on November 8, 2018. Ramsey was immediately named the team’s starting shooting guard and dazzled in his regular-season debut, scoring 19 points in a win over Eastern Illinois.
His season was going very smoothly up until November 28 when he sustained a hamstring injury in a loss against Iowa. He was forced to miss several games, which hurt his team’s performance. Ramsey eventually made his return to the court and finished out the remainder of the season until play was suspended. He put up impressive numbers on the year averaging 15 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. After the season, Ramsey officially declared for the 2020 NBA Draft.
Strengths
- Possesses a solid frame for a player of his position
- A very versatile scorer with an array of moves to finish his shots
- One of the top three-point shooters in the nation averaging over 42% from beyond the arc
- Stellar at making shots off the dribble
- Uses his skillset to create his own shots effectively
- An offensive weapon in the catch and shoot game
- His elite athleticism makes him a threat to finish in the post
- His crafty ball-handling and vision help him maneuver around defenders
- Has shown flashes of potential on the defensive side of the ball
- Averaged four rebounds per game as a guard
- His offensive skill set should allow him to immediately contribute to his new team
- At age 18 he still has room to grow and add plenty of muscle to his frame
- Has a very high ceiling compared to most prospects
Weaknesses
- Very inconsistent as a defender and has often been a liability
- Gambles too much on pump fakes which lead to easy baskets for opponents
- Not much of a threat as a passer
- His lack of defensive play and passing ability could limit him to being a situational player
- Struggled at the free-throw line, averaging just over 64%
- Due to injuries and a shortened season, there is less film on him
- While he has a higher ceiling than most he also has a lower floor
NBA Player Comparison
While not identical, Jahmi’us Ramsey most directly compares to former Los Angeles Lakers forward Michael Beasley. In terms of size, these two have very little in common. However, in terms of playstyle, these two are near identical. Both are very dynamic scorers who can finish from just about anywhere on the court. Both are solid rebounders but struggle mightily on the defensive end. Beasley was limited to more of a situational player throughout his career, and that may just be the case for Ramsey as well.
NBA Draft Projection
Ramsey has a plethora of traits and skills that are going to interest many teams throughout the first round. His elite offensive skillset and high ceiling will make him a desirable prospect. However, his defensive inconsistency and lack of passing skills will likely push his name down the draft boards. At this point, Ramsey projects to be a late first-round pick with the potential to move into the top 20.
