Hornets vs Knicks Preview: Charlotte’s Final Regular Season Test

The Hornets vs Knicks game carries stakes that only one side truly feels. The Charlotte Hornets close out their regular season at the most iconic arena in basketball, Madison Square Garden, against a New York Knicks team that has already locked up third place in the East.

This is not the competitive finale anyone would have drawn up for Charlotte. Nevertheless, the stakes on their end remain very real. Win tonight, and the Hornets secure the ninth seed and a home play-in game. Lose, and — provided the Miami Heat win in Atlanta — Charlotte drops to tenth, heading to Miami instead with one life left in their postseason bracket.

Hornets vs Knicks Preview: Charlotte’s Final Regular Season Test

Seeding aside, this game also marks the final chapter of one of the most extraordinary in-season turnarounds the NBA has seen in years. The Hornets started 11-22. They close the regular season having won 32 of their last 58 games. Whatever happens in the play-in, that story deserves to be told in full.

New York: Rest Mode, Except for One Man

The Knicks arrive at this finale in excellent spirits. Their five-game winning streak, built on victories over Memphis, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, and Toronto, takes them into the playoffs riding genuine momentum. Jalen Brunson dropped 29 points in Friday’s 112-95 win over Toronto, while Karl-Anthony Towns added 22 points and 10 rebounds.

None of those key contributors will feature tonight. Brunson, Towns, Josh Hart, and OG Anunoby, who exited Friday’s game with a left ankle injury and will use this week to recover before the playoffs begin, are all out. The Knicks’ bench players step into their moment. Jordan Clarkson leads the available options, averaging 8.7 points across 17.8 minutes per game this season. Young guard Miles McBride, who averages 11.8 points, 2.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds, brings energy and a genuine desire to impress ahead of the postseason. These players know they are auditioning for playoff minutes tonight, which means Charlotte should expect a competitive effort from a motivated group of backups, not a stroll in the park.

The one exception to the rest protocol is Mikal Bridges. New York’s 6’6″ small forward will start tonight specifically to keep his extraordinary consecutive games played streak intact. Bridges has now appeared in over 633 straight NBA games, the longest active streak in the league, without missing a single one since entering the league in 2018. He will likely check in for a token number of minutes before exiting. For Bridges, tonight’s tip-off matters in a way no standings position can capture. He is one of the last true ironmen in the modern NBA, and that streak deserves its own kind of respect.

Charlotte: Responding After Back-to-Back Disappointments

The Hornets arrive at MSG carrying the sting of two straight losses. First came the road defeat at Boston, a game where they led by 11 after the first quarter and still fell 113-102, with the Celtics outscoring them 58-41 over the final three quarters despite LaMelo Ball‘s 36-point effort. Then came Friday’s home humiliation against Detroit, where Charlotte collapsed 25-10 in the fourth quarter and lost 118-100 to the top seed. Grant Williams said it plainly in the locker room afterwards: “They punked us.”

Consequently, tonight demands a response. The Hornets’ starting core should show up fully healthy and motivated. LaMelo Ball, who averages 20.1 points, 7.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game this season, brings elite playmaking against a patchwork Knicks defense. Brandon Miller (20.2 PPG) attacks from the wing. Miles Bridges (17.2 PPG) brings physical energy. And then there is rookie Kon Knueppel, averaging 18.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists while leading the entire NBA with 270 made three-pointers.

If tonight runs as expected, this is the best possible matchup for Charlotte to close the regular season. The Knicks cannot match the Hornets’ firepower with their backups.

Key Statistical Edges

Charlotte’s statistical advantages tonight go beyond the obvious. Charlotte averages 12.8 offensive rebounds per game and generates the second-most second-chance points in the league at 17.7 per game. Without Towns and Mitchell Robinson on the floor, the Knicks lose their most imposing rebounders. Charlotte’s board dominance should reach new levels in that context.

Furthermore, the Hornets attempt 43.2 three pointers per game, second-most in the NBA, and convert them at a 37.9% clip, also second league-wide. Against a weakened Knicks defense missing its best perimeter defenders, that combination of volume and accuracy is a serious problem.

Injuries

New York Knicks: Jalen Brunson (right ankle injury management), Karl-Anthony Towns (right elbow injury management), OG Anunoby (left ankle sprain), Josh Hart (right ankle injury management) and Mitchell Robinson (left ankle injury management) are out.

Charlotte Hornets: PJ Hall (ankle fracture) is out, and Coby White (left groin soreness) is probable.

Prediction: Hornets Win Comfortably

Charlotte wins tonight, and does so convincingly. The competitive edge has evaporated on New York’s side, but the Hornets’ motivation remains at its peak.  The Hornets get the ninth seed, earn a home play in game against Miami, and walk into Tuesday’s bracket with the crowd at Spectrum Center behind them.

This is Charlotte’s game to lose. After everything this team has shown since January, they will not waste it.

Tip-off Time: Sunday, April 12, 6:00 p.m. EST
