OKC Thunder’s Defense Shows Growth at the Right Time

The NBA season is closing in on the final stretch. This means every team is fighting for either a shot at the playoffs or finalizing their rotations. With 14 games left to play in the regular season, the OKC Thunder’s defense is clicking well with glimpses of playoff intensity in recent wins. So far, nothing has been easy for OKC, and everything is earned.

Riding an eight-game winning streak, Oklahoma City is leaning on its defense to win games. Now, in a schedule against East teams for the rest of the month, it’s only fitting to see them thrive on what they do best. Defense has been their strong suit, and it cannot be denied that they’re working on it. Now more than ever, one can hope for the Thunder to continue honing that defensive dominance again.

OKC Thunder’s Defense Shows Growth at the Right Time

In the last eight games, OKC has only finished with two double-digit wins. The rest were decided in clutch time, three of which saw Shai Gilgeous-Alexander drilling clutch go-ahead baskets. In short, those games had the OKC defense working late, pulling off stops and forcing turnovers. In fact, OKC forced 22 turnovers in their comeback win against Minnesota.

For a Thunder fan, this is definitely good news. This is a sign that they are gearing towards a playoff push now more than ever. And it could not have come at the right time.

Defense Wins Championships

By now, you should know that OKC takes pride in its defense, and for good reason. This same squad boasts the best point differential in a single season at 12.87, and they’re still leading the pack this season. That says a lot about their defensive dominance. If you are not impressed, their 107.5 defensive rating this season is the best, and that’s the same number they had in their championship campaign.

To take this up a notch, the Thunder are showing a 105.8 defensive rating in their eight-game winning streak. This means they’re finding ways to even exploit weak spots on the opposing team. To sum it up, OKC is clearly dominating by a mile night in and night out. If there was a sign that fans are waiting to see from the best team in the league, this is it.

If there’s one thing to expect from OKC and the rest of the season, it’s winning. Sure, they’re now sporting a 16-6 record against the Eastern Conference, but this current squad is capable of locking up opponents for the rest of the month. The fact that they’re doing it despite not being at full strength is highly impressive. Now, if they are fully healthy, imagine the havoc they’re capable of.

We all know how SGA is capable of stepping up on defense. Jalen Williams is another force to be reckoned with on defense when he comes back. On top of that, you have a DPOY candidate in Chet Holmgren covering the paint. What more could you ask for?

Caruso is a Defensive Beast

Alex Caruso isn’t here for nothing. He’s been the championship piece that Thunder fans have been looking for. So far, his defensive presence is impacting their wins. In that streak, the Bald Mamba had at least a steal or a block in each of six games. Sure, he’s not scoring big points, but his defense is helping shape OKC’s defense to take off to another level.

Caruso’s presence on the floor is solid. He punishes lazy passers and is able to come up with a great read most of the time. This is elite basketball at its finest, and there’s no doubt that he’s bringing the thunder every time he is stepping into the court. The fact that he can even serve as a shooter is baffling at this point.

As one of the veteran players in the squad, he’s setting the tone once more for OKC. Defense was missing heading into the All-Star Break. But in the right place and at the right time, the Thunder are clicking well. Caruso plays a huge role in making sure they stay composed on that end.

McCain and Wallace Igniting the OKC Defense

Cason Wallace is a defensive player deserving of a bigger spotlight. He leads the league in steals at 2.1 per game, and even has the most steals at 134 as of the time of writing. Behind him are the likes of Tyrese Maxey, Dyson Daniels, Ausar Thompson, Kris Dunn, and Kawhi Leonard. As the other half of the “Cookies and Cream” duo with Caruso, Wallace is learning well from his peers to maximize his defensive abilities. He’s even passed J-Dub for the eighth-most steals in Thunder history.

The fact that he’s also constantly taking over Lu Dort‘s defensive duties is promising. He’s capable of turning up the engines as soon as he forces a turnover. But nothing comes close to the surprise of many fans when Jared McCain was showing his defensive growth in just a short period of time.

In his last eight games for OKC, McCain has been lighting it up with electrifying performances. However, what made this run better is how he is turning out to be a huge factor in the OKC defense. McCain already knew that he had to lock in on defense as soon as he got traded to the Thunder. So far, JMac has been consistent in that regard.

At this point, McCain is showing his worth not just as a reliable three-point shooter but as a crunch-time player as well. This is something that hasn’t been seen in his time in Philadelphia. The fact that OKC is putting more trust in McCain on both ends of the floor says something about his impact on defense.

The Thunder Defense is Stunning

It is clear that this year’s Thunder won’t be beating the previous year’s record of 68-14, which is arguably one of the best records in NBA history. That doesn’t mean that this year’s OKC defense is subpar. Sure, there were initial struggles heading into the All-Star break, but that didn’t see them fall a single spot from the top of the Western Conference.

Considering how tight the playoff race is, OKC is still leading at the top. This just proves that the defense is still superior. In fact, it is showing growth. If that trend continues, and they finally return at full strength, what more can they bring to the table in the coming weeks?
