Jalen Williams made his first All-Star team this year.

Jalen Williams’ First All-Star Game Could Bring Him Many Benefits

Last night was the NBA’s first experiment with the new All-Star game format. While some people enjoyed the new format, others didn’t. Regardless, if the players or fans liked the new format, it brought out more competition from the players that hasn’t been seen for a while. It will be interesting to see if the NBA makes any tweaks or changes to this new format for next year.

The Thunder had Jalen Williams make his All-Star game debut last night. His teammate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander played in his third All-Star game. Even though Williams didn’t light up the box score in his first All-Star appearance, he should be able to walk away with some benefits that will help his development.

Unfortunately, Williams’s first All-Star appearance ended short, as his team was eliminated in the first round. In his debut, he scored just two points, shooting 1-3 from the field, and had one assist, one steal, and one block. Shai’s team “Chuck’s Global Stars” eliminated Williams and “Kenny’s Young Stars” as Shai had a game high 12 points and was perfect from the floor. Let’s explore how this experience could benefit Williams.

Jalen Williams’ First All-Star Game Could Bring Him Many Benefits

This Might Be His Only Appearance In The All-Star Game

Being named an All-Star player is a huge privilege that you can’t take for granted. Unlike his teammate Shai, who will most likely be an All-Star for the next decade as he is the best player on the Thunder, Williams might not know the next time he will be an All-Star again. Next year, he will be competing against his other teammates in Chet Holmgren and other players to be an All-Star again. In addition, it is not common for teams to get three All-Stars; typically, the maximum number a team gets is two. This is why it seemed like Williams was just trying to take in the whole experience, as he doesn’t know when or if he will be back.

Since he doesn’t know if he will be back or not, it could push him harder in the offseason to get even better to make sure he consistently makes the All-Star team. The versatile 23-year-old could eventually become a multi-time All-Star with this extra motivation. Overall, having two to three All-Stars each year will benefit the Thunder.

Being Able To Learn From Other All-Stars

In addition to Jalen pushing himself even harder, he will also get a chance to learn from other All-Stars. When you are in season, you may talk to players from other teams, but you aren’t going to have in-depth basketball conversations with them. While Shai is a great person to learn from every day, it doesn’t hurt to learn from others. All-Star Weekend is the perfect chance to learn from other players, including greats like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry.

For example, in the offseason, if Durant or somebody else is doing a basketball activity, they may now invite Williams to that event. This will give him more opportunities to improve in the offseason and learn from all-time greats in the NBA.

The Last Word

With Williams’ first All-Star Game in the books, it is now back to business for him and Shai. The Thunder duo is hopeful to be able to experience multiple All-Star games together. With Chet back healthy next season, things will only become more interesting. However, right now, their focus is back on the season, with them taking on the Utah Jazz in their first game back. Shai and Jalen will resume their journey and focus on trying to win their first NBA Championship together and lock down the number one seed for the second year in a row.
