Scoot Henderson had a career-high 39 points.

Scoot Proves He is the Blazers’ Future With Breakout Game

Portland Trail Blazers guard Scoot Henderson has not met expectations over his first two seasons. But, a breakout performance against the Nets might be a turning point for the Blazers’ future floor general. With an impending Anfernee Simons trade, Scoot might finally become the focal point of the Portland rebuild.

Scoot Proves He is the Blazers’ Future With Breakout Game

The Portland Trail Blazers have been a puzzling team over the past two seasons. Moving on from Damian Lillard meant they had to choose a new primary playmaker. Before they dealt Dame to Milwaukee, they selected Scoot Henderson as the third overall pick in the 2023 Draft. Most people thought he was the next superstar guard in Portland, but his performances have been lackluster.

Simons remained as the Trail Blazers’ starting guard and a trade did not happen during the 2023-24 season. It was a bizarre decision from the Portland front office because it has played a role in Scoot’s slower development. Thankfully, Henderson is making the most of his opportunities to become the Blazers’ future star. One of those days was his most recent performance against the Brooklyn Nets.

Scoot’s Performance Showed He Belongs in the Portland Rebuild

Henderson had a career-best performance against the Nets. He posted a stat line of 39 points, four rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Notably, Scoot’s 39 points are a career-high. Scoot’s efficiency stood out, shooting 72.2% from the field and 80% on 10 attempts from beyond the arc. His performance from three in particular was superb. Since Scoot struggles with efficiency, this game was an encouraging sign. For his career, he has only scored 13.3 points on 39.4% from the field and 33% from three. That is quite inefficient, but he plays better whenever he’s in the starting lineup.

The 20-year-old has not received the full-time starting role he deserves because Anfernee is still in the way. Most Blazers fans expect a Simons trade to come sooner rather than later. There are still worries about the franchise’s decision for their long-term point guard. However, the 39-point game against the Nets alongside development in the Blazers’ future could be why they stick with Scoot.

How Scoot Felt After His Career-Best Performance

It was natural to feel elated after a superb game. Unfortunately, Scoot and the Trail Blazers lost the game 132-114. Henderson liked his good performance but wanted to win above everything else. That is a good mindset for a young guard because he knows what’s important in the NBA.

Scoot was the obvious choice for the podium for the post-game interview. He talked about his solid performance but still saw instances where he could improve.

“I always go back to what I could’ve done better, what we could’ve done better and of course, get the heck back. Too many transition points for them. At the end, bad awareness by me, not seeing D-Lo getting down the court,” Henderson said in the post-game interview.

The 20-year-old also talked about his responsibility of being a point guard. He knows he can take as many shots due to his role as the primary ball-handler. Scoot wants to be the playmaker, so he always looks to create plays. He knows he can score, but as he progresses, he would value instilling confidence in his teammates.

That bodes well for his potential long-term backcourt alongside Shaedon Sharpe. They already have natural chemistry as extremely athletic guards. But, they complement each other’s skill sets well, which could become a focal point in the Blazers’ future.

Scoot Knows Consistency Will Be Vital for His Career

Due to the high expectations, Scoot has not been a favorite among most NBA fans. Thankfully, a large group of Blazers fans still wholeheartedly believe in him. That could be crucial to his long-term future in Rip City because the team supports their players. Of course, Henderson still has to hold up his end of the bargain by consistently performing at a high level.

Consistency has been one of Scoot’s primary issues during his short NBA career. He can have marquee performances, but he could stink up the place in the following game. If he wants to maintain his role in the Blazers’ future, Scoot must keep playing an efficient style.

Lessening the turnovers (3.2 per game for his career) could make him a positive playmaker. He already has the passing vision and risk-taking attitude to boot. The efficiency is also a big deal for Henderson because teams might choose to sag off on him on defense. He should make them pay by becoming more of a shooter because that is integral to any modern-day point guard.

The Blazers will make a decision sooner rather than later between Henderson and Simons. Scoot is the likely choice due to his age. He might have a higher ceiling than Anfernee even if the latter is the much better player today. The Portland rebuild hinges on the team hitting on their picks. Trusting Scoot’s development could lead to great results for the team, especially with Sharpe and the supporting cast.
