The Boston Celtics remain arguably the best team in the NBA to begin the 2024-25 season. After winning their 18th title in franchise history, the Celtics brought back essentially the same roster that brought them to the promised land last season. Except for Svi Mykhailiuk (signed with the Utah Jazz) and Oshae Brissett (remains unsigned), every player from last season’s Celtics team remains on the team. Furthermore, the team only brought in one new addition to the main roster–rookie Baylor Scheierman.
Boston drafted Scheierman with the last pick in the first round during the draft. The Nebraska native came in as a tremendous perimeter shooter and could take some pressure off players like Sam Hauser. However, Scheierman’s NBA career has been forgettable so far. The 24-year-old has appeared in just three NBA games and struggled during Summer League and preseason.
Just two weeks into his NBA career, the Celtics have assigned Scheierman to their G League affiliate in Maine.

Boston Celtics Send Baylor Scheierman to the G League
Why This Was the Right Decision
It was always unlikely that Scheierman was going to play a major role in Boston right away. However, a big appeal to his joining a team like the Celtics was his NBA-ready build and capability to produce immediately if needed. Fortunately for the Celtics, they have plenty of talent and an established rotation as is, meaning that they do not need to rely more heavily on Scheierman than they should. However, even so, what Scheierman has shown on the court so far is a bit underwhelming. In theory, a lot of his shortcomings can be attributed to his lack of playing time. However, he has shown very few flashes at any level since the Celtics drafted him. Playing in the G League will give him an opportunity to find his rhythm and showcase his talents.
Additionally, we are already seeing what roughly a full year in the G League can do for a few Celtics players. Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta, who spent most of their time in Maine last season, have taken that next step this season. Both players are assuming a larger role with the Celtics this year and should grow as the campaign continues. Scheierman likely will not need a full year in Maine. However, it is clear that there is a benefit for some players to get started in the G League, especially for the Celtics.
The Last Word On Baylor Scheierman
It is way too soon to put a label on Scheierman’s Celtics career. However, it is a bit disappointing seeing how he has looked so far. Regardless, the Celtics drafted him for a reason, and he has a lot of time to turn things around. On paper, Scheierman is a great fit in Boston. His perimeter scoring can become important to the team down the line. Additionally, he provides tremendous wing depth. His next stop is the G League, but it will not be a shock if he finds himself back on an NBA court sooner rather than later.
