How Kawhi and LeBron Could Reshape the Warriors This Summer

The Golden State Warriors may pursue Kawhi Leonard and LeBron James ahead of a huge offseason poised to reshape the roster.

After another rollercoaster season, Golden State is reportedly weighing major moves this summer to strengthen its championship window. With speculation mounting, all eyes will be on how the Warriors navigate what could be their most important offseason. But would adding stars like Leonard or James be enough to help Stephen Curry and company capture an eighth franchise championship?

How Kawhi and LeBron Could Reshape the Warriors This Summer

Why the Warriors Are Eyeing Big Moves

Golden State is enduring one of its toughest seasons in recent memory. A major move this summer would not come as a surprise. With the team suffering its 39th loss of the season and key players out indefinitely through injury, Curry needs all the help he can get. If he wants to finish his career on a high note, changes are needed.
The four-time NBA champion has played just 29 games for the Warriors this season, his fewest since the 2019-2020 campaign. Adding a superstar like Leonard or James could represent the perfect next step for the Warriors. They look to rebuild a championship-caliber roster and help Curry chase a fifth ring.

Kawhi and LeBron: Fits for Golden State

According to Marc Stein, the Warriors made a late push to acquire Leonard before the February 5 trade deadline. However, they ultimately came up short, instead landing Kristaps Porziņģis.
Now it appears that Golden State could ramp up its efforts this offseason as the franchise looks to the Clippers’ superstar for extra support. Having a seven-time All-Star like Leonard, who can work well on both ends of the floor, is the exact player the Warriors need. At 34 years old, his long-term timeline remains uncertain, but he is still producing at an elite level, shooting 50% from the field while averaging 28 points per game. Plus, as a two-time champion, Leonard brings proven playoff DNA. Golden State wouldn’t want to miss out on this opportunity a second time, with the postseason in mind.
Meanwhile, for years, rumors have connected James as a potential target for Golden State. The 23-year veteran continues to perform at a high level despite being the oldest player in the league, and the idea of him playing alongside Curry has long been discussed.

A facilitator like James, who still passes and scores like he’s in his prime, would fit perfectly into Steve Kerr’s system in Golden State. This season has shown exactly why, with James and Luka Dončić helping guide the Lakers to the third seed in the Western Conference. A move that once seemed unlikely is now a real possibility. It certainly would be a game-changing move. And for the Dubs to stay competitive in the West, acquiring the 22-time All-Star could instantly elevate the roster.

A Crucial Offseason Ahead

After injuries, inconsistent offense, and defensive struggles this season, the Warriors’ offseason targets have suddenly become vital. Pursuing veterans like Leonard and James may raise eyebrows. This is especially puzzling, given the challenge of balancing minutes for their older players. However, the Warriors seem willing to continue this risky approach.
With Leonard potentially leaving the Clippers, a move to Golden State could be a real possibility if he wants to compete for a championship alongside the star power in the Bay. The situation is similar with James. With each new rumor, it’s becoming increasingly possible that he could play his final NBA season in a Warriors jersey.
Much of this, however, depends on how both the Clippers and Lakers finish the season. With both teams in stronger playoff positions than the Dubs, Leonard and James might decide to stay put. Golden State will be watching closely.
