Recently hired Providence coach Bryan Hodgson looks to make Providence prominent again.

Why Providence Hired Bryan Hodgson And Can He Bring The Friars Back To Prominence

The Providence Friars have their next coach in Bryan Hodgson.  The Friars, who reached the Sweet 16 in 2021-22, have missed the NCAA Tournament in each of the last three seasons.

“We are thrilled to have Bryan Hodgson join Providence College as the leader of our men’s basketball program,” Providence College President Fr. Kenneth Sicard, O.P., said in a statement on Sunday. “Bryan brings a strong track record of leadership and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. His dedication to integrity, hard work, and competitive excellence aligns closely with the values of Providence College. I am confident that the future is bright for Friar men’s basketball, and I eagerly anticipate seeing the team reach new milestones under their new leader’s guidance.”

Why Providence Hired Bryan Hodgson And Can He Bring The Friars Back To Prominence?

Hodgeson, who reportedly turned down Syracuse early last week, is leaving USF to take the Providence job. His decision comes three days after the Bulls lost to Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2011-12.

Hodgeson did a fantastic job in his first season in Tampa. The Bulls tied a program record with 25 wins and claimed their second American Conference regular-season title in three years. The Bulls also won the American Conference Tournament for the first time, marking the first time in school history that they doubled up on championships.

USF finished the season ranked in the top-60 in the nation in both offensive (43rd) and defensive (55th) efficiency. The Bulls were the ninth-highest scoring team in the nation at 87.5 points per game, setting a program record with 2,974 points (12th most in 2025-26). They also set program records in 3-pointers made (323), free throws made (679), and road wins (9).

Hodgson becomes the 17th coach in Friars history. Hodgson replaces Kim English, who went 48-52 in his three seasons with the Friars and 23-37 in Big East play. The Friars went 15-18 this past season and 7-13 in Big East play.

“Let’s get this out of the way: Providence College had to let go of men’s head basketball coach Kim English,” John Rooke of The Providence Journal said. “Based on precedent, even if the landscape has changed wildly over the past 15 to 20 years, when you compete in the conference that Dave Gavitt built, you compete to win. And that didn’t happen here, not to anyone’s satisfaction.”
