Steve Kerr is one of the most successful NBA figures in league history. Since taking over as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors in 2014, he led them to four NBA championships and five NBA Finals appearances. However, before becoming a coach, Kerr was a successful NBA player as well. In his 15-year playing career, the Lebanese native won five NBA championships between his time with the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. He is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist, once as a player and once as a coach. However, arguably the most impressive fact of Kerr’s career is that he was a part of the two best regular season teams in league history, a title the current Boston Celtics seem to be striving for as well.
Kerr played for the 1995-96 Bulls that went 72-10 and coached the 2015-16 Warriors, who went 73-9. Very few people in the NBA can say they have won as much as Kerr, including the reigning champion Celtics.
In a recent interview with Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports, Kerr spoke about the current Celtics. Kerr mentioned that, while the Celtics are the best team in the league, he does not believe they and head coach Joe Mazzulla are specifically aiming to break the all-time regular season team record.
“I don’t think you go into the season trying to do that,” he told Heavy Sports. “We didn’t with the Bulls; we didn’t with the Warriors. Now, as you go and you get closer, you kind of go, ‘Oh, that would be cool.’
“But I think it’s the coach’s job to manage the season, no matter what you’re doing, and that’s all part of it. You have to navigate your own set of circumstances, the age of your players, the health. I can’t imagine Joe (Mazzulla) would chase that. I don’t know that any coach would.
“I mean, obviously we didn’t even win the ring that year,” he said of the 2016 Dubs who fell to LeBron James’ Cavaliers in the Finals. “I think the whole idea is to put yourself in the best position possible to win, and if you happen to win 70, you win 70.”
Steve Kerr Reflects On Boston Celtics Potentially Breaking Season Record
The Celtics’ Current Standing in the NBA
The Celtics had the best record in the league last season with 64 wins. Fast forward to the next season and a championship later, the team has not skipped a beat. Through two-and-a-half weeks into the 2024-25 season, the Celtics are 7-2. Their only losses have been to the Indiana Pacers in overtime and Kerr’s Warriors in a primetime thriller. However, they have missed Kristaps Porzingis to begin the year, who is recovering from a leg injury he suffered during the NBA Finals. Additionally, star Jaylen Brown has missed multiple games due to a hip injury. Nonetheless, they still look like the team to beat in the NBA.
Once Porzingis and Brown return, the team should take it to another level. However, in the meantime, they remain one of the top teams in the league. Only the 9-0 Cleveland Cavaliers stand above them in the East. Furthermore, they are each the only two teams in the conference with a winning record. There is still a lot of basketball left to be played, but it is tough to imagine the Celtics not finishing as top team in the NBA once again.
