Hope at the Bottom

For two seasons in a row now, the Spurs have won 22 games and missed the playoffs. Last season, however, Spurs fans were treated to a new hope they hadn’t felt since Kawhi Leonard departed the franchise. Wembanyama, the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, exploded onto the scene showing that he will be the face of the Spurs, and maybe the entire league for the foreseeable future.

Wembanyama played 71 games, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks. His incredible rookie performance earned him the first unanimous Rookie of the Year in almost ten seasons. He led the entire league in blocks, showing that even as a rookie, he made a huge impact on the defensive end.

Despite Wembanyama’s exciting debut, the Spurs did not perform up to expectations last season. They were projected for 28.5 wins and fell short of the win total with 22 wins. The Spurs have gone under for the previous two seasons.

Veteran Fortification

After Wembanyama proved he was ready to win, the Spurs picked up some veterans this offseason to help. Harrison Barnes and Chris Paul will join the young Spurs this season, bringing tons of NBA experience and one of the best point guards of all-time to feed the French big man.

The Spurs also drafted Stephon Castle with the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Early comments from head coach Gregg Popovich and new teammate Paul show that Castle has been impressive during the Spurs training camp.

Young Spurs Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan are also poised for improvement (although Vassell will be out to start the season). Last season, Popovich experimented with Sochan at point guard. While it wasn’t a successful experiment, the experience may have proved valuable for Sochan’s development.

Spurs Win Total Odds

Oddsmakers are projecting a big improvement from the Spurs this season. Wembanyama and the Spurs 22-win campaign last season showed enough upside that their current win total is set at 35.5 (-122 over/+100 under). The additions of Barnes and Paul are worth a few wins. Potential improvements from Vassell and Sochan should make the Spurs much more competitive as well.

The Spurs haven’t won more than 35 games in the last five seasons. Popovich is widely considered one of the best coaches of all time, and he has been tested over the last few seasons. He now has veteran leaders to pair with a young superstar. We’ve seen Popovich be extremely successful with that recipe before. Although a championship this year is certainly far-fetched, greatly improving and winning over 35 games is certainly in the cards.
