The Miami Heat officially opened the training camp after holding their first media day before the 2024-25 NBA season. Besides seeing a fully healthy roster rallied in Bahama for some 5-on-5 and shooting drills, the Heat’s former player Udonis Haslem surprisingly appeared in the team’s promo video on X (formerly Twitter), lifting weights with Bam Adebayo.

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra said after the team’s Tuesday training session.
“UD is always around. He is lifting weights right now. He jumped in a few pre-practice drills. He’s the best mentor in the league. It’s always great to have him on the mix.”
After retiring from a 20-year career with the Heat, the Miami legend and the franchise’s rebound leader was appointed the Heat’s Vice President of Basketball Development last year, but how he played his role for the team is what we are curious about.
Udonis Haslem Continues to Impact the Heat In a New Role
Udonis Haslem is one of the most respected players in Heat history. He spent 20 years with the franchise, winning three NBA championships while posting averages of 7.5 points and 6.6 rebounds. Haslem retired after the 2022-23 season and now finds himself in a new role with the organization. Notably, the Heat retired Haslem’s No. 40 jersey in January.
Haslem’s Current Role and His Impact on the Team
Being a Vice President of Basketball Development, Haslem’s role involves several key responsibilities. He acts as a crucial resource for the coaching staff, providing mentorship to both Miami Heat players and those in the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Heat’s G League affiliate. His duties also extend to representing the organization in community and business endeavors, making him a vital link between the team and its broader community.
Adding Haslem to the franchise with a new role is smart as his impact on the Miami Heat is multifaceted. As a former player who embodied ‘Heat Culture,’ he continues to influence the team by serving as an additional coach and mentor, especially for younger players like Nikola Jovic, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and other new rookies.
His extensive experience and leadership qualities make him one of the best mentors in the league, with younger players eager to learn from his knowledge. His presence ensures that the Heat’s locker room maintains its strong leadership dynamics.
Future Contributions
Looking ahead, Haslem is likely to continue shaping the future of the Miami Heat. As a top consultant, he will play a significant role in guiding the next generation of Heat players, especially monitoring the team’s health entering the season. Like most of the coaching staff and Heat fans, he believes it matters a lot to the team’s success.
Haslem said the following to Forbes Magazine last month.
“We just have to stay healthy. When you talk about the Eastern Conference, it has gotten better. However, I don’t think anyone understands what a healthy Miami Heat team is capable of.”
His belief in the team’s potential, especially with young talents like Tyler Herro, underscores his commitment to helping the Heat remain competitive at a higher level. Haslem’s long-term vision and dedication to the organization suggest that he will be crucial in maintaining and enhancing the team’s success.
