Sixers Fall Short of Odds
All things considered, the Sixers had an okay season last year. Embiid missed half the season with injuries, but they still won 47 games and entered the NBA playoffs with a shot. They went under their projected total of 48.5. Unfortunately, Embiid was once again hampered in the playoffs, and the Sixers lost in six games to the New York Knicks.
What a night for Tyrese Maxey!

The bright spot was the ascendance of Tyrese Maxey. Maxey was able to step into a lead scoring role while Embiid missed time and had a breakout season. He averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds in 70 games above all, though he showed that he could be a young star to pair with Embiid during his prime. Notably, Maxey won the Most Improved Player award.
George to the Rescue
The Sixers enter the 2024-25 season with hopes of finally breaking through after years of falling short in the playoffs. The addition of nine-time All-Star Paul George has fueled optimism, creating an intriguing trio with Embiid and Maxey. Maxey is still on an upward trajectory, but pairing his timeline with that of the aging Embiid and George is an experiment with a wide variety of outcomes.

The offseason saw several key signings, including Andre Drummond, Guerschon Yabusele, and Caleb Martin, strengthening their depth. While Philadelphia’s success heavily depends on Embiid’s health, the presence of George provides insurance if Embiid misses time. If the Sixers’ roster stays intact, they should not only be able to exceed their projected win total but also contend for an NBA championship.
Current Sixers Odds
Philadelphia’s win total for the upcoming season is set at 52.5. Despite concerns over Embiid’s durability, the Sixers have outperformed their projected win total in three of the last four seasons. They’ve only won more than 52 games once since Allen Iverson’s 2000-01 MVP season, and it was during Embiid’s 2022-23 MVP campaign.
The Sixers depth chart has the talent to exceed the win total from two seasons ago. While the addition of George is monumental, the real difference maker for this season will be in how many games he and Embiid can play.
George played 74 games last season, his highest since the 2018-19 season. Embiid won a gold medal with Team USA at the Paris Olympics, but the extra mileage of playing tournament basketball during the summer could come back to bite him. Maxey showed last season that he can carry the load himself when Embiid misses time, but for the Sixers to win 53 or more games, they will need a lot of injury luck with Embiid and George.
