2-Time NBA Scoring Champ Reflects on Decision to Sign With the Nuggets

Russell Westbrook signed with the Nuggets during the offseason.

Russell Westbrook, a two-time NBA scoring champ, and 2016-17 MVP signed with the Denver Nuggets this offseason as a free agent. During NBA media day and other press conference sessions this week, Westbrook opened up about why he wanted to play in Denver. His new teammates and coach also discussed what Westbrook will bring to a team looking to return to the NBA Finals.

Russell Westbrook Talks About Denver Nuggets Decision

Westbrook is a great player and one of the greatest point guards ever. However, considering he has jumped from team to team recently, and his play and impact have decreased significantly, it’s understandable not to expect too much of the nine-time All-Star teaming up with Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray. Well, that’s not the opinion coming out of Denver.

Jokic and Murray have both spoken in high regard and respect for Westbrook this week. During their own press conference sessions, they repeatedly complimented his game.  Additionally, they praised who he is as a player and what he’ll bring to the Nuggets as a team. Clearly, coming from the two superstars, Westbrook isn’t going to be a bystander; he’s going to create energy and impact. He’s in Denver to win.

Westbrook discussed his decision to sign with the Nuggets this week, explaining why Denver was the best choice for him during a press conference.

“The culture. Looking out from outside looking in. [The] Team has always been at the top of the Western Conference. Always in the hunt to win a championship, always play the right brand of basketball. I’m always at this stage of my career looking to play the right way regardless of the wins and losses. Playing the proper brand of basketball allows everyone to get involved.”

For a player who has never experienced the joy of winning a championship, Westbrook seems convinced that the Nuggets provide him with the best chances of reaching that elusive career milestone.

Michael Malone Lauds Westbrooks Game

The Nuggets’ coach, Michael Malone, also spoke confidently about the team’s new addition, echoing Jokic and Murray.

Malone is on point here. Westbrook’s defensive energy and tenacity are the one part of his game that is still in full effect. His defense was still evident during that uncomfortable tenure with the Lakers. While his offense had clearly dipped, he was still a highly effective defensive presence and matched up against the best players. He carried those defensive attributes to the Clippers, and now the Nuggets will hopefully reap some benefit from them also.

Will Westbrook Fit?

As Aaron Gordon remarked in his press conference, Westbrook has already earned the respect of his new teammates, who are excited to play with a legend.

Now, it’s about the fit as the new NBA season approaches. Will Westbrook gel alongside Jokic, Murray, Gordan, and Michael Porter Jr.? The Nuggets are expected to remain a top team in the West this season. Time will tell if Westbrook will play a significant part in that.
