The Dallas Mavericks defied expectations last season by reaching the NBA Finals as the fifth seed in the Western Conference. They need to build on their success. The talented Mavericks roster has a renewed sense of determination; they are aiming to go one step further and bring home the NBA championship trophy.

Last season, the Mavericks finished with a record of 50-32. They were the number five seed in the Western Conference. The NBA betting win total odds for the Mavericks last season was set at 45.5. Although they only reached the fifth seed, the Mavericks roster still eclipsed their projected win total by six games. This season, the Mavericks odds are projecting them for 49.5 wins, almost exactly their win total from last season.

The Mavs certainly believe they will be able to improve on their 50-win season from last year. Their ability to exceed their win total odds will depend on their capability of integrating new pieces onto their roster.

Dallas Mavericks Past Roster Improvements

The Mavericks roster is continuing to take shape around All-NBA star Luka Doncic. Luka’s play is always what will make or break the Mavericks’ ability to compete, but the Mavericks’ front office continues to play skilled complimentary pieces around him. The first key addition was Kyrie Irving, a secondary lead ball handler to take some pressure off of Luka. The Mavericks were 39-19 in games Irving played last season, and although Irving didn’t perform well in the 2024 NBA Finals, his presence certainly was key in getting there.

The next key additions to the Mavericks roster were Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington they picked them up at last year’s trade deadline and immediately reaped the benefits. Gafford and Washington were key pieces in the Mavericks 2024 playoff run, their most successful postseason run since the 2011 Dallas Mavericks NBA championship.

Can Klay Save the Day?

The biggest news for the Dallas Mavericks roster this offseason was the addition of Thompson. Klay spent the first 11 years of his NBA career building a hall-of-fame resume with the Golden State Warriors. He is now the shiniest new toy for Luka.

Pairing Klay’s three-point shooting ability with Luka’s passing is certainly a tantalizing concept. Thompson shot 38.7% from three last season and averaged almost 18 points. Thompson’s career three-point percentage is 41.3%. The spacing that Thompson’s three-point catch and shooting ability brings to the Dallas offense will be key.

Dallas Mavericks Odds: Win Total

Having Thompson, Gafford, and Washington for an entire training camp and season is huge. Picking up Quentin Grimes and Naji Marshall should also improve their depth. The Dallas Mavericks odds put their projected win total at 49.5. If these Mavericks roster improvements pan out, and Luka continues his All-NBA play, a 50-win season seems very doable for the Mavericks.
