According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the San Antonio Spurs are waiving point guard Jamaree Bouyea. Bouyea, along with David Duke Jr. and Harrison Ingram, was with the team on a two-way contract.

The 25-year-old initially joined the Spurs back in March. Bouyea spent most of his time in the G League, averaging 14.8 points, 5.9 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 2.7 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 12 games with the Austin Spurs. His time in San Antonio was forgettable, however. Bouyea appeared in just three games for the Spurs, averaging 3.7 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist. Additionally, while it is an incredibly small sample size, Bouyea did manage to shoot 71.4% from the field in that time.
Since entering the NBA as an undrafted free agent in 2022, Bouyea has also played for the Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, and Portland Trail Blazers. However, his most notable run was with the Heat’s G League team, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, during his rookie season. During the 2022-23 campaign, Bouyea averaged 17.8 points, 6 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and 1 block per game. His impressive year landed him NBA G League All-Rookie Team and All-NBA G League Second Team honors.

What’s Next for Jamaree Bouyea?
Currently, it is unclear what exactly led to San Antonio’s decision to waive Bouyea. It could simply be for roster flexibility, or the team would rather give their final two-way roster spot to someone else. Regardless, Bouyea is a good player who should be with an organization by the start of next season. There is also the possibility that he will return to the Spurs and play for the G League team.
Ultimately, it was a long shot that Bouyea could play a consistent role in the NBA for the Spurs next season. Despite his talent, there are plenty of guards ahead of him on the depth chart. Most notably, future Hall of Famer Chris Paul and rookie Stephon Castle figure will likely have big roles with the team next season. Additionally, the team signed Malachi Flynn this offseason and still has Tre Jones and Blake Welsey on the team.
Where the Spurs Go From Here After Waiving Jamaree Bouyea
It is unlikely the Spurs will be in playoff contention next year. However, they will still be one of the most exciting teams to watch in the league. This summer, in addition to signing Paul and drafting Castle, the Spurs also acquired one-time champion Harrison Barnes. Plus, the basketball world will monitor the progress of reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama.
San Antonio is still a long way away from legitimate contention. Regardless, there is a lot of potential on the team. In the past two seasons, the Spurs finished with a 22-60 record. They have not had a winning record since the 2018-19 season. Entering Gregg Popovich’s 29th season as the team’s head coach, the Spurs will be one of the league’s most interesting teams to follow next season.
