According to team reporter Bobby Manning, the Boston Celtics have signed Jordan Schakel to an Exhibit 10 contract. With this signing, as Manning says, the Celtics now have 21 players currently on the roster as they approach training camp. This is the maximum number of players allowed on the roster at this point in the year.

The 26-year-old is familiar with the Celtics organization at this point. Last season, Schakel played 11 games in the G League for the Maine Celtics. On the year, he averaged 12.6 points and 5.3 rebounds. Furthermore, he shot 39.2% from the field and 39.3% from the three-point line.
Schakel signed with the Washington Wizards as an undrafted free agent in 2021. However, the wing only played in six games for the team across two seasons.

Jordan Schakel Will Likely Play in the G League Next Season
Since he is rejoining the team on an Exhibit 10 contract, it seems highly unlikely that Schakel will make the Celtics’ roster next season. Additionally, even if he does manage to move up from the G League, Schakel will probably play a role similar to Svi Mykhailiuk at best. He is an exceptional perimeter shooter with some versatility. However, on a team as loaded as the Celtics are, Schakel will not be able to get any sort of consistent playing time. This is especially true for the 2024-25 season specifically. However, it is telling that the Celtics used their final training camp roster spot on him.
Schakel possesses a lot of tools and played well enough in Maine last season to stick around for a little while longer. An immediate roster spot is unlikely for the San Diego State alum. However, if he plays well enough in training camp and the G League next season, Schakel could eventually earn himself a roster spot down the line.
The Last Word on the Boston Celtics
As the reigning NBA champions, the Celtics naturally have high expectations ahead of the 2024-25 season. They kept the entire team together this summer, outside of Mykhailiuk and Oshae Brissett (though he remains unsigned). Furthermore, they drafted Baylor Scheierman, who could contribute to the team immediately, and Anton Watson, who currently occupies a two-way spot. The Celtics also recently signed Lonnie Walker IV. However, like Schakel, he comes to Boston on an Exhibit 10 contract and may not make the team.
The Celtics remain the team to beat in the NBA despite many other teams having stellar offseasons. Boston will be without star Kristaps Porzinigis for a portion of the season. However, as they proved in the playoffs, the Celtics are still a dominant force even without him on the court.
Boston will begin their training camp on September 25. Then, they will prepare to go head-to-head against the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Abu Dhabi Games. These games will take place on October 4 and 6.
