Why the New York Knicks Are Legitimate Title Contenders

New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau high fives New York Knicks forward Julius Randle (30) with guard Donte DiVincenzo (0) and forward OG Anunoby (8) and guard Jalen Brunson (11) during the first quarter against the Washington Wizards at Madison Square Garden.

Thanks to some key upgrades, the New York Knicks are being viewed as legitimate title contenders this season. With the additions of Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby, they’ve bolstered their wing positions significantly. These two players give the Knicks a defensive duo capable of matching up with the league’s best wings.

Why the New York Knicks Are Legitimate Title Contenders

Go Go Gadgets

Contending for a title adds significance when facing the Boston Celtics’ star duo, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Bridges and Anunoby bring both defensive intensity and the ability to score on their own. Bridges is known for his versatility, length, and ability to lock down opposing scorers. He also can contribute offensively by cutting to the basket or knocking down threes. Anunoby is one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA, with a knack for shutting down elite scorers. Together, they can give opposing teams nightmares on both ends of the floor.

Leading The Charge

While Bridges and Anunoby are important, the Knicks’ success revolves around Jalen Brunson, one of the league’s top point guards. Brunson’s breakout season last year showcased his leadership, playmaking, and ability to score at will. He’s efficient in getting to the rim, creating opportunities for teammates, and hitting timely shots. Having Brunson continue his strong play will be vital for the Knicks to contend.

One of the reasons New York is in such a good position is their roster continuity. The team hasn’t made major overhauls, so the core group has developed strong chemistry. With most of last year’s playoff roster returning, the Knicks enter this season with a high level of comfort playing together, especially with Brunson leading the way. This cohesion is critical, as teams often take time to gel after significant changes. But “Nova Knicks” have avoided that challenge, which could give them an edge over other teams.

Perfect Second Option

The return of Julius Randle as a secondary scoring option further strengthens the Knicks’ offensive punch. His ability to score from the perimeter or dominate inside will wreak havoc on opposing defenses. With the focus on Brunson, Randle will often face single coverage, which he is more than capable of exploiting. Randle’s offensive versatility allows him to play both inside and outside, giving the Knicks different ways to attack defenses.

What truly makes New York dangerous is their two-way potential. Defensively, they can switch almost every position with Bridges, Anunoby, and Randle. Offensively, Brunson’s ability to create, Randle’s versatility, and Bridges’ emergence as a scorer make them unpredictable. Add Anunoby’s potential to contribute from beyond the arc, and the Knicks have a balanced attack.

The Last Word

The Knicks’ bench unit, featuring Donte DiVincenzo and Josh Hart, also remains strong, giving them the depth to withstand long stretches during the season. This depth ensures they can keep fresh legs on the court, which will be critical in long playoff series. With this, New York’s title hopes rest on their new wing duo, strong returning core, and leadership from Brunson. If everything falls into place, the Knicks could very well find themselves in the Finals.
