It’s official, free agent center Omer Yurtseven has signed a contract with Panathinaikos, the Greek club announced Friday. It seems that the two sides have been working on an agreement after Panathinaikos’ interest in Yurtseven was reported weeks ago. It now comes to fruition with Yurtseven inking a two-year deal with the second year including an NBA-out clause.
Omer Yurtseven Inks a Two-Year Deal with Panathinaikos
Omer Yurtseven has definitely made a significant career move by signing with Greek powerhouse Panathinaikos in the aftermath of being waived by the Utah Jazz on July 1st. This decision definitely marks a new chapter in Yurtseven’s journey. Yurtseven’s tenure in the NBA has seen its share of ups and downs. The Turkish big man faced limited opportunities with the Jazz, where their crowded front court left him struggling for minutes. In 11.4 minutes per game, Yurtseven posted averages of 4.6 points and 4.3 rebounds. Yurtseven spent the previous two years of his three-year career with the Miami Heat. His decision to sign with Greek Powerhouse reflects a desire for more playing time and a bigger role. Panathinaikos can certainly provide him with this and I’m told this is something Yurtseven definitely values.
The Turkish Big Man Had NBA Interest
Despite his departure from the NBA, Yurtseven remained a player that garnered interest from multiple teams. Most notably the New York Knicks who I first reported in early August expressed interest in the free agent big man. Approximately two weeks after my report, Marc Stein of TheSteinLine reported that Yurtseven auditioned with the Knicks. Ian Begley of SNY added that the workout was held in July and New York actually put in an offer to Yurtseven although was something he would not consider.
The New York Knicks are among several teams that have registered interest in free agent center Omer Yurtseven, per sources. Yurtseven and his representatives would like to join an organization where he can get an opportunity for playing time, sources said.

For Yurtseven, the move to Panathinaikos is more than a shift in geography. It represents a change of environment and a chance to showcase his talents on a different stage. The Greek club will provide Yurtseven with great opportunities and the chance to play a significant role against high-level competition. Notably, Panathinaikos look to become back-to-back Euroleague champions. This environment will be ideal for Yurtseven to develop his game further. It also has the potential to catch the attention of NBA personnel once again.
Excited to be here! Back to back ☘️ 🔜 🏆 https://t.co/Eo7cO8hFVH

The Last Word
Ultimately, Yurtseven’s decision to sign with Panathinaikos after being waived by the Jazz suggests that he’s a player wanting the right fit and the right opportunity to prove his worth. If he showcases great play with the Greek club surely NBA personnel will pursue him next summer promising a bigger role the next time around. Crucially the Turkish big man has an NBA-out clause. As he joins one of Europe’s elite teams, there is a sense of optimism this this new beginning will surely allow him to flourish, showcasing the skills that once made him a promising prospect in the NBA.
