Trailblazers Lottery Pick Being Set Up For Struggles
Henderson, a promising six-foot-three guard, had a solid start to his NBA career. He averaged 14.0 points, 5.4 assists, 3.1 rebounds, and 0.8 steals per game over 28.5 minutes. However, his shooting performance was below expectations, with a field goal percentage of just 38.5 and an average of 3.4 turnovers per game. These statistics are common for rookie point guards, who often face steep learning curves.
The Trail Blazers’ struggles to provide the right support for Henderson are partly to blame for his difficulties. Their current roster lacks the necessary complementary pieces to maximize Henderson’s potential. Key player Jerami Grant, who shot over 40% from three-point range last season is rumored to be on the trading block. Anfernee Simons is also rumored to be in trade discussions despite his 38.5% shooting from beyond the arc. The team’s shooting options are limited. Duop Reath was the only other player who shot above 35% from three. Unfortunately, he may not be a reliable long-term solution.
Adding Deni Avdija to the roster could provide some assistance. However, Avdija’s game primarily involves driving and ball movement rather than high-volume shooting. The Blazers’ need for improved shooting is glaring.
Defensive Improvements and Shooting Struggles
Several players on the Blazers’ roster and potential targets have shown impressive defensive capabilities. Unfortunately, they have struggled with shooting. Kris Murray, Dalano Banton, Jabari Walker, Rayan Rupert, and Toumani Camara have all demonstrated strong defensive skills, particularly in the latter part of the 2023-24 season. However, their shooting performance has been a concern.
Murray averaged 0.9 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. Despite his defensive contributions, his shooting from beyond the arc was inconsistent, with a percentage of just 26.8. Banton, another player noted for his defensive ability, averaged 0.6 steals per game and 0.4 blocks per game. However, his shooting from the field was subpar, with a 29.6% success rate from three-point range. Walker showed defensive improvement with 0.6 steals per game but struggled with his outside shooting, managing only a 29.5% shooting percentage from three-point territory.
Rupert’s defense was notable but he faced challenges with his shooting accuracy, hitting just 35.9% from beyond the arc. Camara contributed defensively with 0.9 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. However, his shooting performance wasn’t noteworthy, with a 33.7% success rate from three-point range.
The common thread among these players is their defensive strength combined with shooting inefficiencies. While they contribute defensively, their lack of shooting consistency limits their impact on the offensive end.
The Trail Blazers’ Strategic Needs
To fully support Henderson and unlock his potential, the Trail Blazers must focus on acquiring players who can provide both defensive solidity and reliable shooting. Drafting Donovan Clingan as a rim protector and screen setter was a step in the right direction (although he’s not a noted outside shooter). However, Portland urgently needs to address its shooting woes.
The current roster’s imbalance, particularly with the dearth of efficient shooters, poses a significant challenge. The Blazers’ inability to find the right fit alongside Henderson highlight the need for some strategic maneuvering.
Portland’s front office must prioritize building a roster that complements Henderson’s skill set. This will ensure he has the support necessary to thrive.
