Alex Antetokounmpo has found a team to play with in Montenegro for the 2024-25 season. While terms of the contract are not yet known, he will be joining KK Podgorica, a club based in Podgorica, Montenegro. The 22-year-old Antetokounmpo ended last season with M Basket-Delamode Mažeikiai in Lithuania, a team he signed with in February of 2024. Antetokounmpo also played in the G League last season.
Brother Of ‘Greek Freak’ To Join Team In Montenegro
Previous Playing Experience Includes Time In The G League
Born in Greece, the six-foot-eight Antetokounmpo moved to the United States prior to attending high school. He would spend his four years of high school playing for Dominican High School in Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin. Rather than play college ball in the United States, Antetokounmpo instead announced he would play in Europe after high school.
In the 2020-21 season, Antetokounmpo would play for UCAM Murcia based in Spain. He was eligible to be selected in the 2021 NBA Draft, but he went undrafted. In 2021-22, Antetokounmpo played for the Raptors 905 of the G League. Each of the last two seasons, he has spent time with the Wisconsin Herd in the G League. In 34 regular season and Showcase Cup games last season for Wisconsin, Antetokounmpo would average 5.9 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.8 assists. He shot 33.8% from the field, 22.5% from three-point territory, and 61.0% from the foul line.
Antetokounmpo would play 12 games for M Basket-Delamode Mažeikiai last season after signing with them. He would finish with averages of 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game. Antetokounmpo shot much better from the field (51.2%) than he did in the G League.
The Antetokounmpo Last Name Has Become A Famous One
Of course, all basketball fans should be well-aware of that lengthy Antetokounmpo last name. That is because of Giannis Antetokounmpo, one of the top basketball players in the world. Giannis has played 11 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks since being selected 15th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. The eight-time All-Star won back-to-back NBA MVP trophies in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. The latter of those seasons, Giannis was also named Defensive Player of the Year. He was the best player on the Bucks team that won the 2021 NBA Finals.
Giannis is not the only Antetokounmpo brother to play in the NBA. Thanasis Antetokounmpo has spent the last five seasons with Milwaukee. He also has a ring from the 2021 Bucks team. Thanasis may miss the entire 2024-25 season though after suffering a torn Achilles.
Kostas Antetokounmpo also has prior experience in the NBA. He appeared in 22 games over three seasons from 2018-19 to 2020-21 with the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers. Kostas has a championship ring due to his time with the 2020 Lakers. He currently plays for Panathinaikos in Greece who are the reigning EuroLeague champions.
Alex is still plenty young enough (turns 23 years old on August 27) to perhaps one day become the fourth Antetokounmpo brother to play in the NBA. The eldest brother, Francis Antetokounmpo, went a different route than the other Antetokounmpo brothers. He played soccer professionally in Nigeria and Greece before retiring from the sport.
