Dallas Mavericks Fantasy Basketball 2023-24 Season Review

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic (77) reacts during the game against the Boston Celtics during game four of the 2024 NBA Finals at American Airlines Center.

To recap the 2023-24 fantasy basketball season, let’s review and analyze the impact players on the Dallas Mavericks had.

Dallas Mavericks Fantasy Basketball 2023-24 Season Review

Luka Doncic

Superstar Luka Doncic was a top-five fantasy player in both category and points leagues (depending on settings) in 2023-24. This was his best value yet, as according to Basketball Monster, he’s ranked outside the top 10 throughout his career. The five-time All-Star nearly averaged a triple-double and placed second in the NBA in points and threes, and third in assists. The only category Doncic hurt was turnovers, as he averaged the second-most in the league. He’s a decent shot-blocker and not the most efficient free-throw shooter, but he made strides by setting a personal best and converting nearly 80% of his shots at the line. Conversely, his field goal percentage is solid for someone who attempted the most shots per game in the league. The 25-year-old also contributed some steals and rebounds, but he shines most on the offensive end. Doncic’s best production came from points, assists, and threes, all career-highs.

Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving’s fantasy ranking slightly dipped after being dealt to the Mavericks at the 2023 trade deadline, but he still maintained borderline top-10 value in category leagues. Despite his elite production, some managers are hesitant to draft the eight-time All-star because his antics and injury history have been known to limit his time on the court. The last time Irving played 70+ games was in 2016-17 with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Putting aside his availability issues, the guard is an excellent multi-category contributor and doesn’t significantly lack in any area. The only stats he fell a bit short in were blocks and rebounds, but he provided a decent amount. The 32-year-old still thrives in points, threes, and assists despite his numbers in these columns declining from recent years. Irving’s accuracy from the floor and charity stripe was also excellent, converting field goals at the second-highest rate of his career. He also doesn’t commit many turnovers for a high-usage player and can grab steals.

Daniel Gafford

After starting 2023-24 with the Washington Wizards, Daniel Gafford was traded to Dallas halfway through the season. The move was disappointing for his fantasy value. He enjoyed a starting role with the Wizards, where he saw a career-high of over 26 minutes of action per game. With the Mavericks, his minutes dropped by five as his addition caused a center rotation battle. Looking at Gafford’s overall season, his contributions in blocks and field goal percentage were extremely valuable. The big man ranked in the top three in the NBA in efficiency from the floor and top 10 in blocks. His rebounds and few turnovers were also solid, but he didn’t offer much else. He didn’t contribute many steals, although his total stocks was three. Offensively, his low double-digit points weren’t impactful, as were his few dimes and non-existent threes. Additionally, his free throw percentage was subpar, converting under 70% of his shots.

Dereck Lively II

Before Gafford moved to Dallas, Dereck Lively II had the starting center job. He didn’t start the season in that role, but the 12th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft quickly proved his value and earned the spot. The rookie finished the year with the league’s most efficient field goal percentage, his best category. Lively also provided value through his shot-blocking, low turnovers, and rebounding. However, his production in the offensive categories wasn’t as beneficial. He didn’t provide any threes, and he was a low-volume free-throw shooter who barely converted over half of his attempts. He provided a bit of scoring and showed some flashes of playmaking, but not enough for fantasy relevance. While his game still needs polishing, and his value dropped once he started splitting minutes with Gafford, Lively displayed great potential in his first year.

P.J. Washington

P.J. Washington was another player Dallas acquired at the trade deadline, coming from the Charlotte Hornets. He mainly played off the bench in Charlotte, but with the Mavericks, he was given a starting spot and over 30 minutes per game. However, 2023-24 featured his lowest fantasy ranking from the past few years. None of his numbers turned any heads, but Washington provided some late-round value with his production in some categories. On the defensive end, he provided a solid number of stocks and some rebounds. The 25-year-old was also known for his low turnovers and three-point shooting. However, that didn’t translate to many points, and he wasn’t much of a playmaker, as he averaged under two assists for the first time in his career. The power forward/center also lacked shooting efficiency, with his splits placing near the bottom of his career averages.
