Utah Jazz Re-Sign Big Man on Two-Way Contract

Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy and owner Ryan Smith

After signing Jason Preston and Taevion Kinsey to a pair of two-way contracts, the Utah Jazz had one more spot to fill. Over one month into the start of the free agency period, it appears the Jazz found a familiar face to take the last spot. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Jazz are bringing back big man Micah Potter to take the last two-way contract opening.

Potter spent parts of the last two seasons with the Jazz on a two-way contract. In that time, he appeared in 23 NBA games, averaging 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds. Additionally, he started his career with the Detroit Pistons but only played in three games for them during the 2021-22 season.

The Jazz big man has spent this summer with the Team USA Select Team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Regarding his experience this summer, Potter says playing for the team has “confirmed my confidence.”

“I always belonged,” Potter said of his Team USA experience. “I always felt like I belonged, I competed like I belonged and I performed like I belonged. I never had doubt beforehand, but being on the floor with the best players America has, it just confirmed my confidence.”

Jazz Still Have Unanswered Questions This Summer

The Jazz have had a relatively quiet offseason so far. Up to this point, the team has not added any players to the team besides their draft picks from his year. However, things could change by the beginning of next season.

For much of the offseason, reports have surfaced surrounding a scenario where the Jazz could move on from star Lauri Markkanen. Markkanen is eligible for a contract extension this summer. However, the team is reportedly weighing all options, including a possible trade. According to Tony Jones of The Athletic, though, Markkaken wants to remain in Utah past this summer.

“Lauri has really taken to Utah. His family has taken to Utah,” Jones said. “Obviously the Jazz can trade him between now and Aug 6th, and Lauri knows that, but Lauri has forged a really close relationship to Will Hardy. And Will has really found a way to unlock his career”

The Finnish native has spent the last two seasons with the Jazz after a short stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his time in Utah, Markkanen has played the best basketball of his career. Over the last two years, he has averaged 24.5 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Additionally, during the 2022-23 season, he became an NBA All-Star for the first time. He also took home the Most Improved Player award the following year.

We are still a few months away from the beginning of the 2024-25 offseason. However, we should expect news on Markkanen’s future soon. Whether the Jazz will retain him or not is something worth monitoring.
