The Over also is a fascinating play, since both teams are in the top-55 in offensive efficiency, per KenPom. But JMU flummoxed the Wisconsin offense Friday, holding it to 37.3% shooting and 61 points in its wire-to-wire win, and Duke is a top-25 defensive team per KenPom.
The Dukes’ run may end, but they certainly won’t be going down without a fight.
If I’m getting almost eight points to bet on a team that has only lost once by that many — and hasn’t tasted defeat in almost two months — I’m absolutely going to take them.
Duke vs. James Madison Prediction
Duke 78, James Madison 75
James Madison, the No. 12 seed from the South Region, will try to continue its Cinderella season against fourth-seeded Duke on Sunday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The Dukes won their 14th straight game, 72-61, in wire-to-wire fashion over No. 5 Wisconsin on Friday. James Madison (32-3) has won 14 straight games and is trying to win two NCAA Tournament games for the first time in school history.
The Blue Devils are the only thing standing in the Dukes’ way. Duke (26-8) knocked off No. 13 seed Vermont 64-47 on Friday and is seeking its fourth trip to the Sweet 16 in the past six tournaments but the first under second-year coach Jon Scheyer.
The Blue Devils are scoring about 80 points per game, led by 7-foot center Kyle Filipowski and guard Jeremy Roach, who combine for almost 31 points per game. Duke is ranked seventh in the country in points per 100 possessions (121.6) and eighth in the nation per KenPom.
But Filipowski only attempted one field goal in Friday’s win, and the Blue Devils are just 4-3 in their past seven games and haven’t hit the 80-point threshold in their past five. Plus, the Dukes are a comparable offensive team too, ranking 11th in points per game (84.0).
JMU may not have a comparably sized player to Filipowski but should make for it with solid guard play and fierce tenacity, which is why the Dukes haven’t lost since late-January and their three defeats have come by just 20 points.
Duke should win, but it wouldn’t stun me to see JMU keep it super close.
