Both the Blue Devils and the Dukes capitalized on their opponent’s turnovers on Friday, turning mistakes into transition buckets to cushion their leads. That should prove more difficult in this matchup — both teams prioritize ball security.
Wisconsin didn’t have a true big man that could cause JMU problems down low, but Duke has that. However, Vermont put some pretty good film together on how to cause issues for Kyle Filipowski, and James Madison has the high-energy defenders to trap and double.
In the end, I expect a few offensive rebounds and big shots down the stretch to make the difference. I’d love to see James Madison continue its amazing year, but something tells me the Blue Devils have enough of an edge to close this one out in a stressful fashion.

I liked the idea of taking James Madison +7.5 at (-130) odds, but the first-half Under provides even more value.
Duke can get out in transition, but it requires bad turnovers to do so. JMU just proved to us that it can handle the ball well against a strong defense, which was one of our main concerns about a team that hadn’t played any Quad 1 games since the turn of the calendar.
Vermont’s swarming defense on Filipowski caused Duke to slow down and rotate the ball long enough to eventually find an open shooter or slasher. I expect James Madison to copy that tactic, at least in the first half.
This is simply too many points for a loser-goes-home setting coming off two strong defensive performances. Both offenses are comfortable slowing down and running smart sets.
As long as we avoid a soft whistle early or a red-hot shooter, this first-half total should crawl to somewhere in the 61-64 point range.
