Now we take a look at Friday’s first round matchups in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Two of the games don’t have point spreads or money lines yet pending the results of Wednesday’s First Four games.
Northwestern v Florida Atlantic. Northwestern is getting 2.5 points with a money line of + 125 while FAU has a moneyline of -155. Last year FAU went on a magic carpet ride all the way to the Final Four. Not this year. The only plays with value are Northwestern.
Colgate v Baylor
The Bears are favored by 13.5 with a money line of – 1400. The money line on Colgate is +775. Baylor should win but they are unpredictable. Colgate will try to slow the pace. Take Colgate with the points with a small wager.
UAB v San Diego State. The Aztecs are favored by 7.5 with a money line of -275. The Blazers money line is +220. San Diego State also made an unexpected run to last year’s Final Four and just like FAU they won’t do it again. UAB is a very live dog to win. Take either the money line or the points.
Western Kentucky v Marquette. The Hilltoppers are getting a whopping 14.5 points and have a money line of +850 while the money line on the Golden Eagles is -1600. Western Kentucky looks like another live dog. Take the points but be careful with the money line.
Stetson v UConn
Do we really need to say anything? The money line on UConn offers no value and the money line on the Hatters is throwing away money. The Huskies are favored by 26.5 points. They will win easily but be careful of a possible Stetson cover when coach Hurley pulls his starters.
New Mexico v Clemson. The Lobos come in to the tournament hot having won the Mountain West conference championship while Clemson has been up and down lately. New Mexico is favored by 2.5 points and has a money line of -140. The money line on the Tigers is + 115. Clemson is the play here.
Yale v Auburn. Yale is a legitimate live dog in this one. Actually they’re not. Auburn has an enormous advantage with athleticism. Neither money line is worth a look. Auburn is minus 12.5 points which actually seems low. Take the Tigers and lay the points.
Texas A&M v Nebraska
This one is basically a pick ‘em with the Aggies laying 1.5 points. The money lines are close to spread bets in terms of value. We like the Huskers because of their outside shooting but this can go either way.
Vermont v Duke
Everybody loves to hate on Duke at tournament time. The Catamounts are getting 11.5 points with a money line of + 600 while the Dukies money line is minus 900. Take Vermont plus the points and consider a small wager on their money line as well. This is one of those games where the entire crowd will get behind Vermont if they hang around and they will.
College of Charleston v Alabama. The Tide are another unpredictable team. They’re favored by 9.5 points with a money line of – 500 while the money line on C of C is + 375. Alabama should win but consider taking the points with the underdog.
Longwood v Houston
The Cougars are not healthy. They’re also very upset after getting destroyed by Iowa State in the BIG 12 conference championship. We’re skeptical of another Final Four appearance for Houston because of injuries but they are not losing this one. Even with giving 23.5 points expect them to cover.
James Madison v Wisconsin
The Dukes are many people’s sexy pick to pull the upset. The spread reflects this as it’s only 5.5 points in Wisconsins favor. James Madison has a money line of + 195 while the Badgers is -250. The Badgers will win but may not cover the spread.
TCU v Utah State
Another tough to call 8 v 9 first round matchup. The Horned Frogs are favored by 3.5. Neither money line offers great value. We like TCU a lot in this one. Give the points.
Grand Canyon v Saint Mary’s
Grand Canyon is another team whose bandwagon a lot of people want to jump on. Saint Mary’s is favored by 5.5 points. The money line for Grand Canyon is + 200 while it’s at – 250 for Saint Mary’s. In a game of contrasting styles Saint Mary’s will come out on top. They’ve been pretty good for years but this is their best team yet. Lay the points.
