Tennessee, the No. 2 seed from the Midwest region, will look to stunt upstart 15th-seeded St. Peter’s second Cinderella run in the past three seasons in Charlotte on Thursday night.
The Volunteers (24-8, 14-4 SEC) won the SEC regular season and were projected as a No. 1 seed until they dropped their final two games, including their SEC Tournament opener 73-56 to Mississippi State. UT has the fifth-shortest odds of any team to reach the Final Four at +350.
But Tennessee better not overlook the Peacocks, the darlings of the 2022 tournament who opened their run to the Elite 8 with a stunning win over UT’s conference rival, Kentucky. St. Peter’s will enter on fire, with eight wins in its past 10 games, including narrow, upset wins over regular-season champion Quinnipiac and Fairfield in the MAAC Tournament.

Tennessee vs St. Peter’s Betting Preview
The Vols probably won’t have to be on upset alert, but there’s no doubt they aren’t playing their best basketball this time of the year. Plus, the Peacocks are a stingy squad that are 12th in points-against per game (63.4) and is tied with Drake for 75th in the nation in adjusted-defensive efficiency (100.9) per KenPom.
The Volunteers rank third in that stat category, despite allowing about 68 points per game this season. Rick Barnes has always coached his teams to be better defensively than on offense, but the Vols are averaging about 80 points per game, led by SEC Player of the Year Dalton Knecht and his 21.1 points per game).
There’s not a single Peacocks player that was on the roster for their Elite 8 in 2022, and St. Peter’s coach Bashir Mason was across the Bayonne Bridge leading Wagner College at the time. But Mason has St. Peter’s playing that same aggressive style that Shaheen Holloway coached two seasons ago, and you can bet the upstart Peacocks will be ready for a fight Thursday night.
I couldn’t possibly bet on St. Peter’s to again come off the 15 line and stun a No. 2 seed — though that would add to the school’s March Madness legend. But given Tennessee’s recent struggles, its own defensive identity, and the Peacocks’ stinginess, the Under seems like a great play for this NCAA Tournament game.
PREDICTION: Tennssee wins 68-58
BET: St. Peter’s +21.5 (-105)
BET: Under 130 Points (-110)
